The Dynamics of Competence Competence is developed and nurtured through time and sustained purposeful effort. It can even grow and develop into mastery and virtuosity; but only through sustained focus, disciplined and dedicated effort guided by your cognitive ability and acute discernment of the landscape signals around you. As I said earlier, you and I go through life perceiving the world almost like deaf and blind creatures; neglecting and ignoring a lot more than what we are actually sensing and processing. Why? Because at rest, all our five (5) external senses are mostly set on low resolution. Our sensitivity and alert systems are set only towards those unusual aberrations that deviate from our mental picture of our operating landscape. When anomalies occur, our internal warning bells go wild and our rapid focusing responses go into full alert. But without those sudden environmental anomalies occurring, our senses are largely unfocused and ineffectual! We manage our everyday lives by exception: maintaining a narrow focus and handling only those perceived anomalies framed against our expected idea of what is normal and safe. If we were to become habituated to repetitively intense and chaotic sensory signals, we will become numb and unreceptive and thereby fail to address emerging threats or detect subtle opportunities. Desensitized and weak sensory systems eventually lead to impaired cognition, discernment and cognitive ability. And if I were to express this concept into a loose mathematical equation, Competence is the product of your Cognitive ability multiplied by your trait Conscientiousness raised exponentially to your X factor. 🚀 Celebrating a huge, and slightly surreal, milestone 🌟 Three years ago, I started a project with the launch of Belong at BHX4. Fast forward 18 months, and it has transformed into the Give, Grow, and Belong initiative that it is today, encompassing all of our community engagement, career development, and equity, diversity and inclusion work. Here's some highlights of our journey so far: 🌍 Give: In the past 18 months, we've organized 35+ volunteering events, contributing over 600 hours to local community projects. From gardening to event stewarding, and even bike repairs, we've made a huge difference. We also supported over 20 charities with cash donations and launched a book donation scheme, gifting 10 school libraries around Coventry with hundreds of books. 📈 Grow: Our mentorship program pairs T1 Associates with Senior Leaders, offering invaluable career guidance. We've hosted career fairs featuring diverse business line leaders, external training sessions on truck driving and coding, and conducted CV workshops and interview prep, resulting in countless internal promotions. 💬 Belong: We've successfully launched all of our Affinity Groups on site, including the succesful launch of our Arabs at Amazon chapter. Our Affinity Fair helped our team connect with our communities and our new contemplation and wellness rooms have created spaces for connection, reflection, and support, especially during significant times like Ramadan and Mental Health Awareness Week. Seeing Give, Grow, and Belong become integral to our site's core values and now part of BHX4’s logo is a testament of our commitment to community engagement, personal growth, and belonging. Looking back on my journey, I realize that the events and experiences that have shaped my idea of the type of organization or work I want to be doing today all revolve around one key value: a sense of caring and kindness for others, coupled with having fun in the process. One pivotal moment for me was in college when I interned at Amway in their social responsibility department. We worked with non-profits, providing them with funding and volunteer support to further their missions. One particular project stands out in my memory - organizing over 200 employee volunteers for a KABOOM! build. In just one day, we built a playground for an organization in need. It was an unforgettable experience, working alongside amazing individuals like David Madiol, Jaclyn Ermoyan, M.A., and Erin Cloutier, MSUXD. That summer taught me the importance of working with great people and for an organization that cares about people and how they work. It made me realize that I needed to prioritize the values of the organization and the people I would be working with before taking on any job. Today, I am fortunate to be working at Ascendle, surrounded by awesome colleagues and for a company that embodies the values I hold dear. While we may not be building playgrounds every day, we are making a difference in the lives of our clients through servant leadership and partnership. Can’t help but feel grateful for life right now.. If I can be honest with you, I’ve had some doubts lately with the direction I’m choosing to take. I often wonder if what I share or write about is making any impact. But after visiting the UNFI tabletop yesterday, all of those worries left immediately and I felt encouraged to do more. Ultimately, making an impact in people’s lives is my purpose. I have many outlets to accomplish this and I execute on them in some way or another, Every. Single. Day. 💥 Being a good role model and setting the example for my family. 💥Bringing food to people’s families through my work at New Seasons. 💥Inspiring people to push themselves, just by sharing what I’m doing in my own life. 💥Creating affordable housing in difficult markets such as Portland, through my partnerships in Real Estate. 💥Sharing my learnings about wealth strategies that may be less commonly known. These are just the ways I know about, and heard abundantly clear as I walked the tabletop yesterday.
