So true! We often see all the great things happening at our friends’ and colleagues’ organizations shared here on LinkedIn. We don’t hear about all the hard things that happen. We don’t hear about the 10 things that went wrong before we learned to do them the way that was successful. We hear about when people get along, but not about the interpersonal conflicts that inevitably arise. We don’t hear about the tough decisions to terminate employees when things aren’t working out. We don’t hear about the unhappy customers/clients that sometimes don’t respond rationally when they don’t get their way…
Social media is a set of curated snapshots, not the full picture. In 2010, Princeton Professor Johannes Haushofer posted a resume of failures on his website. It included sections like “Degree programs I did not get into“ and “Fellowships I did not get.” Haushofer’s goal was to help students realize that rejection is part of the path to success. “Most of what I try fails, but these failures are often invisible, while the successes are visible,” he explained. So the next time you get glum because of a post, remember that you’re usually only seeing someone else’s highlight reel.

Rejection is part of the process. Part of the journey. Failures can be an opportunity for improvement, a “not right now”, or even a “not meant for you”. Reframing how I’m impacted by rejection and failures has allowed me to better acknowledge how I feel about it, identify what I can learn from it, and move on. Sometimes you have to change your plans. Change how you get to a goal or even change the goal all together. That’s okay! Remember that we define what success looks and feels like for ourselves. You don’t have to follow the norm or societal expectations if you don’t want to. It’s okay to be scared. Keep going! Don’t be afraid to make your own path. Life’s a journey! 🙂 #wecandothis #authenticliving

Helpful reminder. This is part why it's important to maintain self-compassion on social media. Be mindful of negative self-judgments when browsing. Be kind to yourself, and remember we are all human who feel both pain and happiness (even if we don't always post about the former). Self-compassion provides a base from which we can share and celebrate the happiness of others, rather than comparing ourselves to them.

This is spot-on. We focus so much on our "success" points and gloss over the "learning path".

I am a Venn Diagram of: Writer & Advocate for disadvantaged Caribbean elder women | Wellness advocate l award winning Community Impact Strategist | Picture book creator | award winning Educator & Change Agent
Behind every vibrant children's book lies an unseen "resume of failures" that shapes its creation. As I ventured into picture book writing, I encountered: Artistic challenges: My "abstract" sketches taught me to embrace imperfection. #Micheleina Tough critics: When my young audience dozed off mid-story, I learned that leadership sometimes means impressing those who can't tie their shoes. #Leadership Rejection letters: Each "no" felt like a paper cut, but remember - it's just a "not yet" in disguise. #MCH Creative differences: Collaborating with an illustrator showed me how diverse perspectives lead to unexpected beauty. #Inclusion Publishing hurdles: Navigating this world felt like solving a blindfolded Rubik's cube. Taking breaks is crucial! #CaringFor To aspiring creators: Your journey, with all its ups and downs, is shaping your success story. Keep dreaming, keep creating! #Leadership #Inclusion #CaringFor #Micheleina #MCH What challenges have you faced in your creative journey that helped you grow?

What do you post on social media? (professionally or otherwise) Highlights only? 💎 It can be hard to share "out there" the more human sides of who we are beyond the highlight reel. Let's face it: We don't like looking bad or weak. We don't have to bare it all, but those more human glimpses of who we are is actually what makes our content engaging 👀 It encourages us to laugh, to learn something, or inspires us to be better. What are some ways you could be a bit more human (especially here on LinkedIn) that tells us a bit more about what makes you, well, you?
