Did you know that on June 28, 1989, the first official Rochester pride parade was held on East Main Street during the 20th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots? As we continue to honor and celebrate our LGBTQ+ community, keep an eye out for Hillside at Rochester's Pride Parade next week on July 20th! I am an LGBTQ+ ally because it's important to me that everyone, regardless of gender, or sexual orientation, feels safe, respected, and celebrated for who they are. Diversity and Inclusion are not just buzzwords; they're fundamental values we should all champion. What you can do this month to be a better ally: 🌈 Take time to educate yourself on historical challenges and societal impact of the LGBTQ+ community. Understanding hardships and triumphs is crucial to effective allyship. 🌈 Be visible, show your support openly by attending Pride events in your local area or supporting a local LGBTQ+ owned business. Not just in June, but all year round. 🌈 Support an LGBTQ+ Organization with a donation or fundraiser. Egale is an organization in Canada with a mission to: "improve the lives of 2SLGBTQI people in Canada and to enhance the global response to 2SLGBTQI issues." 🌈Amplify LGBTQ+ voices, share a post on your social media, share art or activism, share resources like books and podcasts, be an advocate for their rights and visibility. An ally's role is to amplify, not overshadow.

I wish everyone a Happy Pride Month. At this time in our history it is as important as ever for employers to recognize that organizational diversity leads to more informed decision making, a cohesive workforce and better economic outcomes. As we celebrate Pride Month I encourage you to educate and bring along those who oppose the tenants of this month long celebration; inclusion, acceptance, joy, belonging, diversity. These projectors of supposed 'virtue', who exist in most organizations and societies and who we all unfortunately have contact with, are the creators of exclusionary constructs that want to control you, maintain power and exert self-righteous mores rather than partner, grow and develop you as an individual. They exist to the detriment of social, corporate and organizational cohesion. Projected virtue in this sense is merely the marriage of caution and hypocrisy. Speak openly about this hypocrisy to reveal to them and the world that diversity is the reality of the human condition, even when they don't want to see it. We are more successful as a species and a society when the full rainbow is seen! Be Vocal Be Visible Be Yourself
