Think about the last time you were part of an organizational change. I'm certain you cringed 😫 Whether a transformation, reorganization, strategic direction, or other reason, change brings apprehension and concern. What makes a difference? The people and how they are involved throughout the process. Here are a few items each role can do to make a difference. ⭐ Leaders: Provide clarity of direction, ensure people have what they need to be successful, empower people to be a part of the change. ⭐ Employees: Get involved as earliest as possible to create a sense of ownership and build advocacy. ⭐ Customers: Inform direction and provide feedback along the way (even better if they are embedded into the process). It's inspiring to see Austin Community College's Theory of Change first hand. The leaders have been clear in direction and communication, and also humble in adjusting and sharing what they don't know yet. The employees are part of designing the strategic direction and are getting radical transparency. Students have been involved from the beginning to provide their perspective. No change is ever perfect. Listening and continually improving help to make necessary shifts to stay focused on the vision. And people help each other keep going. To help them acclimate to campus life, all incoming Stonehill College students are required to take a one-credit “First-Year Experience (FYE)” course during their first semester. Volunteer faculty, staff and returning students facilitate this class. We recently asked this year’s FYE facilitators to offer their best advice on studying, figuring out the best career fit, and making friends in college.  “Accept change, confusion and new experiences,” Michael Sheehan ’25 said. “It’s completely normal to not be quite sure what you want to do. My best recommendation is to say ‘yes’ to classes or experiences outside your major.
