Let's talk about skin cancer. 🗣️ Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the U.S., with more than five million cases diagnosed each year. Knowing the warning signs and going for routine screenings can also help save lives even when skin cancer does develop. Here’s everything you need to know during #SkinCancerAwarenessMonth.

‘In Australia, skin cancer is a chronic disease.’ Professor Kiarash wears two work hats. He is the Director of Dermatology at the Princess Alexandra Hospital (PAH) and a research scientist leading the Experimental Dermatology Research Group for the The University of Queensland. 🏥 Born in Iran, Professor Kiarash grew up in France, where he studied to be a Doctor of Medicine. After moving to Queensland in 2009 with his family, his interest in skin biology and regenerative medicine shifted towards skin cancer. Melanoma, and other types of skin cancers like basal cell carcinomas and squamous cell carcinomas, are all too common in Queensland. ‘Your skin reacts to ultraviolet (UV) sunlight and that reaction is the initiator of skin cancer,’ he explained. Professor Kiarash’s current research focuses on preventing skin cancers in the high-risk group of organ transplant recipients. ‘Because they are given immunosuppressive medication, their defences against skin cancer are much more reduced. Overall, there's about 12,000 transplant recipients in Queensland and skin cancer is their main cause of death, so it's a major problem in these individuals.’ His current clinical research trials are testing an existing organ transplant medicated cream called siroskin, which has relatively few side effects. ‘It stops immune cells from proliferating, but also stops skin cells from proliferating, so that's why we’re using it as cream in this trial,’ he said. Professor Kiarash’s first research trial with kidney transplant patients reduced the number of superficial skin cancers on their forearms by three-fold. The current trial is for six months and on larger number of patients, this time applying the cream to their face and scalp. Many of his patients believe that once sun damage is already there, efforts to protect themselves against further damage won't make a difference. ‘One of the things that we've shown in our research is that from the moment you sun protect [slip, slop, slap, seek and slide], you stop the process of melanoma progressing.' Professor Kiarash was presented the 2024 Research Translation Excellence Award at the Queensland Health Research Excellence Showcase, along with a $3500 grant to fund this important research. According to a global analysis of cancer data, approximately 325,000 new cases of melanoma and 57,000 deaths caused by melanoma occurred in 2020. The incidence of melanoma varied significantly across different countries and regions of the world. Basal cell carcinomas, frequently referred to as 'BCCs', are a more common, lower-risk skin cancer that we see in our dermatology clinics. Not to down play the fact that rates of all skin malignancies continue to rise across the UK, but BCCs are definitely something that I see a lot more of each day compared to melanoma. Perhaps in my personal experience, they are, however, a tumour that most patients have never heard of, unlike melanoma, when I diagnose them. But we shouldn't ignore or forget about them either when checking our skin! People should always get anything new or unusual on their skin checked by a GP or a specialist Dermatologist, not just "funny looking moles". The vast majority of BCCs are dealt with by one surgical procedure or even creams in certain cases, however if left for too long, they can be more difficult to treat. I admire Anna Varle's personal account of her BCC journey which I read earlier today. She concludes "....if I can encourage just one person to wear sunscreen, a hat and to get anything checked that doesn't look right, I'll be happy." Look after your skin. Take care in the sun.
