I agree home ownership is a good wealth builder but only if you don’t fall for the two traps used by banks to take your money. 1. Private Mortgage Insurance (PMI) - total waste of your money to “protect” the bank from you defaulting on the loan, if you have less than 20% equity. The bank will not let you know when you have reached 20%, to get extra money out of you. There’s also a timeline for paying PMI even if you don’t reach 20%, but again they won’t tell you when, so ask what the date is so you can call and cancel it. 2. Refinancing - it sounds like you are saving money by refinancing but it’s a lie. The banks setup loans to collect their interest payments upfront. When you refinance the loan resets allowing the banks to charge you for the interest all over again. They will call you on a regular basis to refinance to a lower interest rate just to reset the interest payments. Don’t give them any more money than you have to, make extra payments every year or even extra money every month to pay off your mortgage sooner. Good luck!
