In this session panelists will share perspectives on where the future of work-integrated learning is heading. Covering topics such as inclusion in WIL/EL, the effect of remote work on institutional practices and broader economic changes, attendees can learn about how institutions and employers are adjusting WIL to be better prepared for this future and what the sector may need to consider moving forward. This session will be moderated by Malika Asthana of D2L and will feature Colleen Phillips-Davis from the University of Waterloo, Matt Rempel, MBA, EdD from Sheridan College and Dana Stephenson from Riipen.

As part of the HEQCO's Consortium on International Education, a new report from the University of Toronto scans the regulatory environment of private career colleges (PCCs), offering a comprehensive overview of the landscape in Ontario and across the country. The report offers an overview of PCCs using publicly available legislation, provincial regulations, grey literature and interviews with senior ministry officials responsible for the regulation of PCCs. Divided into four sections, the report outlines the types and requirements of PCCs across Canada; institutional licensing and renewal processes; the requirements for registration as a Designated Learning Institution, which is necessary for enrolling international students; and the student services and supports available at PCCs, including funding programs, counseling services and housing supports. Our latest report focuses on Public College-Private Partnerships (PCPPs). In Ontario, much of the recent growth in international students was driven by enrolments at public colleges through PCPPs, primarily located in the Greater Toronto Area. PCPPs have existed in Ontario since 2005, but enrolments increased dramatically starting in 2019. In 2023–24, 14 public colleges had partnerships through 23 PCPPs. Twenty percent of all international enrolment at Ontario public colleges was concentrated in PCPP sites. A new Higher Education Quality Council of Ontario (HEQCO) review of PCPPs and their role in supporting labour market needs suggests an important mismatch between programming offered through PCPPs and Ontario online job postings in 2021–2023. Decades of research on school-to-work transitions have revealed income disparities based on education levels, fields of study, and program types. The Student Experience section of HEQCO’s Quick Stats has a new graphic focused on student progression rates which are indicative of student persistence. A student’s likelihood of persisting in their postsecondary education is tied to their ability to integrate academically and socially. Integration is affected by the complex interplay of a student’s background characteristics, academic preparedness, economic situation and their sense of belonging on campus.
