Why HR and Business Leaders Must Support Working Caregivers In today’s workforce, the reality of caregiving is increasingly affecting employee performance and well-being. Recent survey findings highlight a pressing need for organizations to implement benefits that support working caregivers. A staggering 34% of surveyed caregivers indicated that the struggle to balance caregiving with job responsibilities is their primary source of stress. This is not just an individual concern; it has broader implications for workplace productivity and employee retention. 84% of respondents reported that caregiving significantly impacts their overall stress levels, and 67% experienced challenges in managing their work-life balance. The unpredictable nature of caregiving for an adult adds to this stress. Many caregivers face difficult decisions that can compromise their professional commitments. Half of working caregivers admitted to making significant changes to their work schedules—arriving early, leaving late, or taking time off to meet caregiving demands. Alarmingly, 32% have taken a leave of absence, 27% reduced their hours, and 16% turned down promotions due to their caregiving roles. These adjustments not only affect individual caregivers but also ripple through teams and organizations, impacting morale and productivity. Therefore, it is crucial for HR and business leaders to recognize these challenges and implement supportive benefits tailored for caregivers. By providing resources such as flexible work arrangements, caregiver support programs, and mental health resources, companies can alleviate stress for these employees, improve job satisfaction, and ultimately foster a more engaged and loyal workforce. There was a 74% surge in employees requesting leave or accommodations for mental health-related issues over the past year, according to a new report. But even though more workers are speaking up about their challenges, support afterward is lacking. Some additional contributors to continuing challenges not mentioned in this article include: ❗️Encouragement (and even expectations) for overworking. ❗️#HR and #PeopleOps staff experiencing #burnout and understaffing as their teams go on the chopping block of mass layoffs. ❗️Lack of attention and effort in creating company culture change. Many employers are still preoccupied with benefits, when healthy and sustainable work culture are what workers themselves say is most helpful, rating it more helpful than therapy and self-care resources. https://lnkd.in/g_uqs_Zm #workplacementalhealth LinkedIn News #leadership #burnout #employeeexperience #futureofwork #workplacewellbeing #PeopleOps

Finding balance between work and family responsibilities is an ongoing challenge, no matter where you are in your career. For those of us with young children, juggling daycare, school schedules, and unexpected sick days can be a daily challenge, often impacting our work and necessitating parental leave. For those caring for ageing parents, the responsibilities shift to managing medical care, financial needs, and daily living support, adding significant stress and potential disruptions to our professional lives. When my mother’s health deteriorated, I made the difficult decision to leave my full-time corporate role. At the time, I could not foresee how her condition would worsen, and staying in my role would have made balancing work and caregiving incredibly challenging. In hindsight, I view it as a blessing in disguise; had I renewed my contract, managing both work and her care would have been nearly impossible. Although she unfortunately passed away in January, I am grateful that stepping away from work allowed me to spend precious time with her that I would not have otherwise had. This is where flexible work arrangements (FWA) can make a difference. Employers need to offer options like remote work, flexible hours, and other supportive policies to help employees manage their professional and personal responsibilities. If not for the immediate well-being of employees, then for the long-term success of organizations. Why should work demand more than it can offer in return? #humanresources #careerdevelopment #careerconversations #professionaldevelopment

Last week was #MentalHealthWeek in Canada. There were lots of lunch and learns happening in workplaces. BUT... What are you doing in your organization THIS week and all the coming weeks to not only talk about things like #MoodDisorders, #EatingDisorders, and #SubstanceUse but to do a better, more compassionate, job of supporting employees who are experiencing one of these illnesses? When I see stats like this: "there was a 74% surge in employees requesting leave or #Accommodation" I feel happy that more people are asking for what they need but I am also incredibly disappointed that Canadian employers are still not getting upstream of what is a terrible trend. Consider what you can do to mitigate the workplace risks that can negatively impact an employee's psychological health and #Wellbeing. #EquityDiversityInclusion Leda HR Annika Lofstrand Lindsay Bissett

Investing in family-friendly policies and benefits can reduce costs and drive employee retention, so why isn't it more of a priority? 3/4 of US employees are balancing caregiving with their careers. Tension between work and private life can reduce productivity or lead to quitting, which costs companies significantly - businesses in the US incur more than $1 trillion in costs annually due to turnover, and that doesn't necessarily include the loss of human capital. Most parents I know (myself included) can share experiences of what not feeling supported does to their physical and mental health, as well as their relationship with their job and their family. For companies to get it right, they need to look at their employee base and build tailored programming that provides the right benefits at the right life stage. The companies that invest here will attract and better retain highly engaged top talent, which benefits everyone. #Futureofwork #Leadership #Employeebenefits
Employees who are also caregivers are more likely to quit their jobs when their work and personal lives blend together. HBS professor Joseph Fuller explains what employers can do to empower and retain these employees.
