Here's a lesson to consider as the school year begins: how can educators effectively honor the cultural backgrounds of all students? Senior Lecturer Gretchen Brion-Meisels and Ph.D. candidate Emily Meland created a model for culturally-sustaining pedagogy which starts with three foundational capabilities for educators: ➡ Being self-aware and taking a critical look at how issues of equity and power play out in their classrooms. ➡ Building caring, authentic, and reciprocal relationships with students. ➡ Knowing how to appropriately shift the balance of power to give students voice and agency.
