The Bre-X mining scandal of the 1990s sent shockwaves through the global mining industry, resulting in significant legal and regulatory changes. In response, Canada introduced NI 43-101, setting new standards for transparency and accountability in mineral resource reporting. This case reshaped corporate governance, enhanced oversight, and led to global reforms in mining regulations, restoring investor confidence. Explore how these changes still impact the mining industry and the compliance lessons we can learn from Bre-X. GRI is once again innovating and evolving positively. For me, this should be the direction, we will not have standards for all processes, but if we think about decarbonization in value chains, it would be essential to have the impacts on basic transformations defined, in addition to mining, I would include the metal/steel industry, the petroleum industry, polymers and chemicals. When we have this data, it will be common for practically all segments, making it less complex and with less uncertainty to determine emissions in the "cradle to gate" section. I also highlight the integration with social impacts, in addition to environmental ones.
As the first comprehensive #sustainabilityreporting standard for the #mining sector- now freely available for download - #GRI14 responds to the growing transparency expectations of stakeholders and provides robust metrics to uncover the impacts mining has on the environment, communities and workers. 📌 To answer the most burning questions of GRI reporters, our Standards team is organizing a series of webinars to explore the GRI Mining Standard’s use and application, discussing how it contributes to more responsible mining practices by focusing on accountability for the impacts that matter most.
