Happy Juneteenth! As we reflect on Juneteenth, it’s essential to recognize the ongoing fight against systemic racism. We need to amplify Black voices and highlight Black leaders, including Black women who have championed social justice and workers' rights. These include Rosina Corrothers Tucker, a key figure in the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, who organized women in laundry and domestic trades. Sylvia Woods, a union organizer in Chicago, who united Black and white workers to improve labor conditions. Hattie Canty, a strike leader in Nevada, who fought for fair wages and better labor standards in the hospitality industry. Juneteenth - a day to celebrate freedom, resilience, and the enduring spirit of Black Americans. A day steeped in history, a reminder of the ongoing fight for racial equality and a call to action to keep pushing for a more inclusive future. Juneteenth - a catalyst to take action – to educate ourselves, amplify Black voices, and dismantle systemic barriers. As an HR leader, I'm committed to fostering inclusive workplaces where everyone feels valued. We can create spaces that celebrate diversity and empower everyone to be their authentic selves. I'm so grateful to work at a company that celebrates and recognizes the importance of Juneteenth, but let's be real, not all companies are there yet. Let's use Juneteenth as a springboard for progress. We can all contribute to a more equitable future by advocating for racial justice in our workplaces and communities. Reflecting on IWD: I’m often asked what it’s like being a Black woman working in the women’s movement - a movement historically and rightly criticized for being exclusionary. My answer: it’s tough but great, actually. When I meet incredible women apart of the Vital Voices Global Partnership network who are social entrepreneurs, activists, or survivors of gender violence, there’s instantly a sense of shared connection beyond what separates us. As a Black woman with a working-class background, I have built-in empathy from my lived experience. And since I’ve become a part of it, I realize how much Black women, and all women, are needed in this movement to help craft priorities for our future. Our challenges as women have attuned us to the injustices happening to women and families around the world. Empathy is our superpower. We are leading our households, we have a lot to say, our experiences and perspectives matter. In my opinion, we should be using every lever and every movement to advocate for ourselves and our communities. And it’s critical for us to be visible in spaces of power and step forward from behind the scenes. There’s more than enough room for us to jump in. This work needs us all.

It’s easy for businesses to post about diversity and inclusion, but it’s another thing entirely to live those values every day. Let’s celebrate the companies that prioritize equity, diversity, and inclusion not just in their messaging, but in their actions and policies. To all the organizations fostering environments where every employee feels valued, seen, and heard—thank you. Your commitment to making meaningful change is what moves us forward as a society. We are just past the halfway point of #BlackHistoryMonth, people. Firstly, this month's theme is 'Saluting our sisters' - To honour the achievements of #Blackwomen who are often the forgotten heroines. This post will not attempt to summarise nor justify the impact Black women have had in my life, and so to that end I'll just say, you are seen and you are loved. And secondly, what makes my role at #EarthwatchEurope so worthwhile and meaningful is the work we are doing to redress the balance of nature equity and to bring nature back to underserved and marginalised groups in the U.K. #Research reveals limitations on access to nature for Black people. Only 26.2% of Black people spend time in nature, compared with 44% of white people. As a Black man, I feel extremely passionate in working to bridge this gap. My connection to #nature has allowed me to explore and learn without the judgement that can be so frequently associated with being Black. When I walk in nature, there is no need to change, to be something else. But, let's not get it twisted - This has not been an easy path. Lack of engagement with outdoor space amongst the UK's Black population is layered and complex. The overriding feeling of not belonging and fear can deter Black people from connecting with nature. And then of course, there is racism. That all being said - Black-led organisations are doing incredible things to connect to nature. This moment in time really feels like shifts are happening and impacting the lives of many. There is of course much work to do and address, because nature inequity is as real as day. To address the climate and ecological crisis is also to address the social and racial disparities that come with it (We cannot focus on the symptoms without a deep rooted focus onto the cause) But, this is really a moment to make space and celebrate the strides #Blackpeople are making in their connections to #nature. I am indeed testament to that. 'When Black people truly understand who we are, it is a truly wonderful thing. It is then we can feel healed and loved. It is then that we can feel safe to be our full selves. And when we are our full selves, we can breathe.' #BlackHistoryMonth #Connection #Nature #Environment #Equity #CelebrateNature

Today my thoughts are with those that have been impacted by the tremendous loss of Dr. Antoinette “Bonnie” Candia Bailey. 🕊️ As the husband of a formidable black woman, I've witnessed the tremendous pressure that black women face to excel in a world that often seeks to downplay their extraordinary capabilities. In moments of self-doubt, they consistently go above and beyond, sometimes at the cost of their own well-being. As a resilient black man, I ponder how we can better advocate for them. Here are three key areas where we can support black women in taking a much-needed breath: 1. **Amplify Voices:** Let's proactively share the achievements, ideas, and perspectives of black women. By amplifying their voices, we shatter barriers and ensure their recognition across all sectors. 2. **Create Safe Spaces:** Establishing safe environments where black women can express themselves without judgment is paramount. Prioritizing their well-being over societal expectations contributes significantly to their mental and emotional health. 3. **Challenge Stereotypes:** It's time to confront and challenge stereotypes that perpetuate unrealistic standards. By actively working to dismantle biases, we play a crucial role in liberating black women from societal expectations that disproportionately burden them.
