Creating Your Winning Strategy – Let’s Make It Simple – Day 10!   Today, we’re focussing on Porter’s 5 Forces Model: a vital approach to measuring both your competition and the potential opportunities of your market: both essential for your strategic growth!     Porter’s 5 Forces   1.     Competition a.     Do you know the number and strength of your competitors? b.     The more rivals you have (especially if they’re mature), the tougher job you have to grow or keep market share. c.     Intense competition will likely drive down prices and, ergo, your profitability. 2.     Disruption a.     Is it easy to enter your market? If so, watch out!! New competitors can bring innovation, lower pricing and lower profits for all. b.     Is it tough? Although this may protect an established business, don’t become complacent! 3.     Suppliers a.     Those with strong bargaining power tend to control pricing, quality, and access to key resources. b.     This can lead to higher costs, especially with few suppliers. 4.     Buyers a.     Those with notable power can demand lower prices, higher quality, or extras! b.     This creates risk when your customers switch providers who have little different to offer. 5.     Alternatives a.     Their existence creates a glass ceiling on potential profitability. b.     When customers have alternative routes available, it may drive you to either lower prices or develop a unique offering.     Porter’s Model provides a structured way to assess competitive pressures. For strategic planning, it offers insights into where a company should focus be that through reducing dependency on suppliers, investing in differentiation, or finding ways to create customer loyalty.
