Drives in Midland are getting more colorful! This past weekend, HSC's Women's Professional Network organized volunteers for Midland Blooms. This year, we planted marigolds along the roadside for the annual community beautification project, with over 500 volunteers in total. Excited to see these colors all summer long and thank you to all who participated. 👏

Chapter One UK's online reading volunteers get as much out of their weekly sessions as the children they read with. "There's a real sense of achievement for me and for her," explains Rochelle Bennie from our corporate partner, Liberty Global. #literacy #itallstartswithliteracy #volunteersweek #volunteering #employeevolunteering #esg #csr #socialvalue #socialimpact #employeewellbeing #employeeengagement
#VolunteersWeek is a chance to celebrate and give thanks to our volunteers for the fantastic impact they have on our young students’ lives. Rochelle Bennie is a Senior Manager, Global Talent, at our Silver Partner Liberty Global. She is one of our amazing 2,700 online reading volunteers who spend 30 minutes reading online with a child each week, helping us to create a world where all children have the literacy skills needed to thrive. Together, our online reading volunteers have racked up an incredible 18,000 hours of reading support this academic year - meaning they have read with children for a whole two years collectively since last September. Hear what Rochelle has to say about her experience volunteering with Chapter One 👇 Stories from our volunteers like Rochelle about the way they see reading confidence blossom in the children they support each week, are truly inspiring and special. 💜 Read more about Rochelle’s experience of being a volunteer: https://lnkd.in/eFJF6QRn #ChapterOne #itallstartswithliteracy #employeewellbeing #socialvalue #socialimpact #socialmobility #literacy #corporatepartnerships #corporatevolunteering #volunteersweek

Juneteenth is a holiday commemorating the emancipation of those who have been enslaved in the United States. It started in Galveston, Texas and is now celebrated every year on June 19th across the United States. Although it has been nearly 2 centuries since this pivotal moment, we are still working towards achieving equity across the nation. There are many nonprofits today that are doing important work in helping our community become a more diverse and inclusive place. These are just a few nonprofits that you can support: 1. National Urban League — The National Urban League is a historic civil rights organization dedicated to economic empowerment in order to elevate the standard of living in historically underserved urban communities. 2. Race Forward — Race Forward catalyzes movement building for racial justice. They work to advance racial justice through research, media, and practice. 3. Color Of Change — Color Of Change is the nation’s largest online racial justice organization, fighting to hold decision-makers accountable in achieving a more equitable society.

I had the privilege of addressing youths in Matero and here are some points as to why Youth Engagement is important. Youth engagement is critically important for several reasons: - Fresh Perspectives and Innovation: Young people bring new ideas, creativity, and fresh perspectives to societal issues and challenges. Their innovative thinking can lead to novel solutions that benefit communities and society as a whole. - Empowerment and Participation: Engaging youth empowers them to actively participate in decision-making processes that affect their lives and futures. This fosters a sense of ownership and responsibility towards their communities. - Building Civic Responsibility: Youth engagement helps in cultivating civic responsibility and a sense of duty towards society. When young people are involved in community service, volunteering, and advocacy, they develop a deeper understanding of social issues and the importance of contributing positively to society.

Anyone who knows me well knows how important my role as a Trustee and Vice-Chair is to me. I have been involved in school governance for 15 years and have been a Trustee in a Multi Academy Trust for three years and I can honestly say that it some of the most meaningful work that I have ever done. Did you know that school governors and trustees make up one of the biggest volunteer workforces in the UK? Over a quarter of a million people are making a difference in their communities and improving the lives of children and young people by giving their time as a governor or trustee. Being involved in school governance is one of the most rewarding ways in which I have been able to give something back to society and play a part in my local community at the same time as developing my professional skills and gaining valuable experience in strategic leadership. You don’t have to be an expert in education or a parent or have any special skills to become a governor. What you do need is enthusiasm for improving outcomes for children, the inquisitiveness to question and analyse and a willingness to learn and get involved If you are looking for a meaningful and impactful volunteer role, I would wholeheartedly recommend becoming a school governor or trustee so you can help to improve opportunities for children and young people in your community. #governorsforachools #schoolgovernors #trustees #makeadifference #volunteer

Happy #VolunteersWeek to all who give up a bit of their time and experience for others. Truth is, it is not all about giving... there is so much to be to be gained by volunteering. Of people who #volunteer: 🧠 77% say it has improved their mental health 👟 53% say that it has improved their physical health 🏅 74% say it has given them more confidence (and that rises to 84% in the 18-24yr old demographic) Volunteering with The Scouts is the chance I get to work with young people (Cubs in my case!) to develop vital skills that will help them in life. Skills like #Teamwork, #Planning, #Communication, and running around in woodland trying not to get captured by other groups of kids. Give it a go!
This #VolunteersWeek, we're celebrating all of our amazing volunteers. A BIG thank you to all. You make all the difference to young people's lives. https://bit.ly/3x0jk9S

There is a lot of talk about diversity and equity in volunteer engagement, but what does that translate to in practice? Assessing Diversity and Equity in Volunteer Inclusion (ADEVI) is a multi-faceted investigation of the diversity of volunteer administrators and the equity journey of organizations they work in. The project's guiding principle is that organizations that are attuned to inclusiveness will be able to engage a more diverse cross-section of their communities. 💡 Check out the findings from surveys and focus groups with leaders who hold the Certification in Volunteer Administration (CVA). Insights are shared in reports, an infographic, blogs, and podcasts. The initiative is a partnership between Arizona State University (ASU) and the Council for Certification in Volunteer Administration (CCVA). It is funded by AmeriCorps. Thanks to the scholar-practitioner team of Mark Hager and Faiza Venzant, CVA for shining a light and leading the way forward on this topic. #volunteerengagement #lovols #nonprofit https://cvacert.org/adevi/

The latest issue of Local Development & Society focuses on an incredibly important topic for institutional philanthropy - place-based grantmaking. There is far too little research guidance on this form of philanthropic practice, but the articles in this issue help fill this void.
OPEN ACCESS THROUGH JULY 31, 2024: Announcing the publication of the special issue of Local Development & Society Volume 5 issue 1 on Place Based Philanthropy and Community Development has been published as a special issued edited and conceptualized by: Patsy Kraeger, Ph.D., CSU- Bakersfield, Frank Ridzi, Ph.D., MPA, Central New York Community Foundation and Lemoyne College, Rhonda Phillips, PhD, F.A.I.C.P, Chatham University, and, Kathryn Dilworth, Ph.D., CFRM, CFRE, Purdue University. I am very proud of this work with my co-editors. It is four years in the making from conceptualization from May 2020 to publication on May 24, 2024. (The actual volume shows an April 2024 publication date for the special issue). This volume adds a global perspective to placebased philanthropy and community development as well as bringing together academics and high level practioners from community foundations to expand the field recognizing the value of both theory, research and practice. https://lnkd.in/g5ys-2_k Local Development and Society is a Taylor & Francis/ Routledge journal is indexed in Scopus. # Placebased Philanthropy # Community Development # Theory and Practice # Community Philanthropy
