An incredible document and submission by Amanda Gearing PhD re requesting greater input from all #financial institutions in Australia to help detect, protect and prevent financial abuse for victim/survivors of #DFV. There is much these financial institutions can do to support victims and prevent #financialabuse from escalating to the point of potential financial ruin. Lack of finances is the primary reason victims return to their abusers. https://lnkd.in/gcWGEYhp The research and knowledge Amanda has provided is invaluable. Prevention is always better than a cure, especially when it comes to finances. So easy to lose it/have it stolen, then so difficult, if not impossible to recoup it. #coercivecontrol #financialabuse #banks
My submission to the Parliamentary Inquiry in financial abuse seeks far greater responsibility from financial institutions to watch for coercive control, identify offenders, report them to authorities and improve their systems to prevent victims from being financially abused and controlled. https://lnkd.in/gq6S9yDY

Quoted text excerpts and some key points from Amanda Geraring's informed submission to the Parliamentary Inquiry re #financialabuse. #Prevention is always better than a cure, especially if it's preventing potentially years of financial hardship and additional trauma or even death in #DFV matters. "Current advisory bodies are struggling under the increasing demand for services. For example, #LegalAid does provide legal advice but does not always provide legal representation. Victims of #financialabuse are, by definition, traumatised and they are frequently unable to cope with re-visiting written and documentary evidence that triggers their traumatic reactions. This makes it very difficult for victims to achieve a just outcome to disputes… Currently, most victims are paying for the damage caused by the financial abuse they have suffered in loss of income, medical costs to recover, legal costs to protect their children and property, paying for alternative accommodation etc. Financial harm is a tactic employed by perpetrators to take revenge on their former partner to continue to curtail their life choices, their freedom and to try to prevent them from flourishing… Financial institutions could initiate focus groups with victims of different types of financial abuse to assist institutions in understanding how different perpetrators have usused the financial system to bring them harm. Survivor organisations are making significant contributions to public and political debate on the key issues that are affecting them, especially the cyber-based abuse which is developing faster than the laws which protect victims of it… Key primary research findings Findings of the National Survey regarding finance-related issues indicate the following key characteristics of coercively controlling relationships: 1. Financial cost of escaping an abusive relationshipMost victims who have escaped abusive relationships report having spent $10,000 - $100,000 to find alternative accommodation, legal advice and representation and medical expenses. Some report spending $500,000 or more to escape an abusive relationship… Nationally, perpetrators made threats to kill themselves, their partners, their children or their pets at alarmingly high rates. The manipulative nature of perpetrators who maintain control of their partner and children by threatening to kill themselves, their partner, the children or their pets is designed to induce terror in the victim so that they do not leave the relationship... Potential opportunity for intervention Now that #coercivecontrol is being criminalised and that financial coercion will be a crime, financial institutions arguably will have a duty of care to alert authorities to suspected financial coercion that they detect or of which they are informed. Prompt reporting, investigation, apprehension and prosecution will have a significantly positive outcome for victims and for #financialinstitutions." #banks #cybercrime #cyberabuse

Wrongful deaths are a tragic combination of loss and injustice. There is no replacing the person you've lost, but there are real, tangible benefits to be won in wrongful death cases, including financial restitution and justice for the harm that was done. This is how money moves from point A to point B bypassing banks. This compounds the complexity of the investigation. The US, Canada, and Australia are bleeding billions per year, and the same money is being used to bribe your citizens to act against your own government and citizens. Put a spotlight on this issue so the common man and the cop on the beat can both recognize the crime when they see it in progress. https://lnkd.in/gvPp-rdM

If you get a phone call, message, or email that doesn’t seem quite right, use this advice given by Mackenzie from our North Bay branch to keep your private information and your money safe: “Trust your gut! If someone is acting suspicious or gives a story that doesn’t quite add up, don’t be afraid to ask more questions!” If you’re ever unsure, consult with your local Northern Credit Union branch or the police before responding to suspicious communications. #FruadPreventionMonth
