Whenever I'm asked 'Why The Bshirt?', it really takes me back in time.
Growing up in the 80s, I remember how big brands like Nestlé made a huge push for formula milk, saying it was better than breast milk. It changed how so many women around the world thought about feeding their babies. In places like Africa, women thought formula was healthier, but it led to some serious health problems for the little ones.
A study by the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) in 2018 estimated that from 1960 to 2015, around 10,870,000 infants in low and middle-income countries died due to the use of Nestlé baby formula without access to clean water, with deaths peaking in 1981.
Then in the 90s, as more and more women, like us, started stepping out into the world, breastfeeding in public became this big taboo. It really knocked the confidence of a lot of women. They felt stuck – either stay in or switch to formula when they were out.
Jump to the 2000s, the time I welcomed my first child into the world. Sadly, not much had shifted in terms of support for breastfeeding mums. Like many others, I found myself in a rush to get back to work, feeling that pressure to balance career and motherhood. This often meant having to cut short the beautiful journey of breastfeeding earlier than I, or many of us, would have liked.
The lack of proper facilities or understanding in workplaces for pumping just added to the challenge. It was this reality that really hit home for me and made acquiring The Bshirt feel like destiny.
The brand's foundation on social values resonated deeply with me. Our goal: stylish yet functional nursing wear that empowers women.
But we didn't stop there. We committed to planet-friendly practices, opting for organic fabrics and ensuring ethical production. Our partnerships with Fairtrade registered factories guarantee fair working conditions and pay.
The impact? Over 85% of women report feeling confident breastfeeding in public while wearing The Bshirt. This is not just fashion; it's a movement to normalize breastfeeding and support mothers globally.
The Bshirt isn't just a brand; it's a statement, a commitment to bettering the lives of women and children, and a step towards a more accepting and sustainable world.
