Work as we know it has changed. Freelance work is exploding, with more employers (and workers!) seeking the flexibility of project-based and contract assignments. There will ALWAYS be a need for full-time employees in marketing and advertising. In-house teams support a brand's values, history, and integrity, but understanding contract work is essential to an organization’s success in 2023. A growing reliance on external contributors means changing how you approach hiring. It means embracing a mix of full-time employees and contractors to get the best from each solution. Some roles should remain in-house, but employers can support the satisfaction and retention of these positions by strategically supplementing projects with skill-specific contract hires. As employers, we have to move beyond the staffing models of the past to embrace a changing workforce. This is a fair question. The HRBP's i work with have their job to do, bringing in a freelancer is not always the preferred route especially when it is to support a perm vacancy. Why would you invest time and money in someone who won't be there long term? However, it depends on how business critical the need is, what is the impact of not having support sometimes... I also find I'm placing freelancers where vendor support might be used as 'external' consultants. For example i have several pricing freelancers who are more ad hoc/project based for specific pricing assignments. In these cases, we work with the line manager's budget, rather than an HR contact.
