It was great to be in person for #ASCO2024 and present our work funded by The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. We highlighted the substantial financial burden for working-aged adults after a cancer diagnosis. Did you know that the median out-of-pocket costs for PRIVATELY INSURED individuals is more than $500 per month in the six months after diagnosis, with the burden highest for those with lymphoma (spending almost $4,000 over that time)? Also, 4.6% of people experienced out-of-pocket costs >$9,000 in the six months after diagnosis! Thanks to my wonderful group of collaborators Robin Yabroff, Jingxuan Zhao, Cathy Bradley, Marcelo Perraillon, Sam Greenwood, and Roxanne Clark for helping to highlight this growing #financialburden and opportunities for #healthpolicy to address it. #umnproud University of Minnesota School of Public Health
It’s a pleasure to be part of this team and pursuing this incredibly important work. Policy changes could prevent financial hardship for many patients, survivors, and their families.
This is very important work... Thank you for sharing!
Thrilled to be part of this amazing team!

4moGrateful for your research on this, Helen and team. The financial impact of cancer-related care is astronomical. I’ll never forget the OOP monthly costs a family member had for Gleevec. It was outrageous. Prior to the elimination of their Patient Access division, I worked as the MN/WI/SD Patient Access Manager for LLS. A significant focus of my work was financial support for families. I distinctly remember one member who had relapsed calling me to ask for advice on taking a second mortgage out so they could afford a stem cell transplant. That conversation will always stick with me.
