Is Net Zero Becoming Detached from Reality? Experts argue that the idea of net zero emissions—adopted by many countries and corporations—is increasingly reliant on speculative technologies. They suggest the Paris Agreement may have been more effective with emissions reduction goals rather than temperature targets. "The time has come to accept that climate policy has failed... We let it die by pretending we could continue burning fossil fuels while avoiding dangerous climate change." A major obstacle remains: the powerful influence of the fossil fuel industry. My new illuminem article argues that US climate policy in the next 4 years can make or break global progress toward net zero by 2050 and the possibility of staying within 2ᵒC. https://lnkd.in/g-w8CG7V Key points: ➡ Global annual emissions are still increasing at the moment. ➡If we begin to cut emissions 5% annually starting now, we'll use up the remaining carbon budget (for 2ᵒC with high confidence) by 2050 and get to only a 74% reduction in annual emissions. It will then require a cheap and high-volume CDR technology to soak up the remaining annual emissions, which doesn't exist today. (See the emissions model here: https://lnkd.in/gtWn8X7X) ➡ In the US, the Inflation Reduction Act puts us on at least a 5% annual reduction path through 2030, but it loses steam after that. Additional regulations to limit auto and power plant emissions in the 2030s are in place, but will need regular updates and can be easily reversed. The IRA itself could be repealed or curtailed, but with more difficulty. ➡As the world's second largest emitter, if the US can't stay on a viable path to net zero by 2050 then it will be difficult to ask other countries (especially those dependent even more on fossil fuels today) to somehow get there in good time. This year's US election will be very consequential for climate.

As climate transformation economist I agree with Mr. Gore calling for more competitive attitude when it comes to net zero ambitions and transformation trajectories not being forced into slow high concentration concensus building COP conference deadlock.It has nothing to do with politics. Simply: present state or global gap when itcomes to: undeveloped technologies, purchasing power and investment realities coupled with global slowing down crisis give no chance to concensus reaching required for 1,5 % scenario. Only strong supply of renewable will render power of fossil fuel demand weaker, cheaper, normal commodity phase out. Strong renewable supply should become matter of national and international security. At present oil production is on the rise and fossil fuel emissions are preventing reach of 1,5 %. But equally many economies are taking renewable energy-efficient ways and renewable energy more seriously. As World Environment Day 🌍 was yesterday, the United Nations Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, in his April 17 message to the Coalition summarized the challenges facing #climateaction best. The Secretary General said that, "It is now vital to go forward with national climate action plans, and their national determined contributions, by next year." These plans with their 1.5° degree limit on global warming are essential to successful climate action. ♨ ⛽ The Secretary General also stated that the best way to phase out fossil fuels is to unlock the financial benefits of renewable energy. As he affirmed, there is no Ministry, and no Minister, more important to making this happen than the Ministries of Finance, and Ministers of Finance from across the globe. 🌟 💱 ♻ Designing national climate plans that support national development plans, and in turn national investment plans, to ensure sustainable development, is the most optimal way forward. 📈 📇 📌 Finance policies and regulations, that support climate action are essential to phasing out major contributors to global warming like fossil fuels, and Minister’s of Finance across the world are integral to making this happen.
