A majority of the floating offshore wind turbine substructure concepts currently proposed are using designs made of #steel. #Concrete floating substructures could be a #costeffective and even more #sustainable alternative, particularly for markets with a lack of local infrastructure related to steel fabrication. However, there is a general lack of specific guidance and standards related to their design. That’s why DNV invited 14 partners to a second phase of the joint industry project (JIP) "Concrete FLOW" which will develop and mature requirements for concrete substructures, specifically tailored for #floating offshore wind farms.   Denis Matha, Global Head of Floating Wind at Ramboll says: “We are very excited to now be part of this JIP and to contribute with our hands-on knowledge and project experience in concrete substructure design projects and support the development of improved guidance and standards in this field. It is the first JIP dedicated to concrete substructures for floating offshore wind and is aiming to enhance standard requirements, customizing them for industrial production to reduce technical risk, enable serial production and hence reduce costs. Offshore wind turbine foundations face unique challenges due to the harsh ocean environment and the immense size of modern turbines. The most common foundation types include monopiles, jackets, and gravity base structures. Monopiles, large steel tubes driven into the seabed, offer a cost-effective solution for shallow waters. Jackets, steel lattice structures fixed to the seabed with piles, provide stability in deeper waters and complex seabed conditions. Gravity base structures, massive concrete bases resting on the seabed, are used for the largest turbines in deeper waters, their weight providing stability. Careful geotechnical assessment and sophisticated engineering analysis are crucial to ensure these foundations can withstand powerful winds, waves, and currents for the lifespan of the wind turbine.

Drag Embedment Anchors (DEA) are a type of anchor that relies on embedding itself into the seabed for stability. These anchors are often used in applications where traditional anchors may not be suitable, such as in soft or loose seabed conditions. Drag embedment anchors work by being dragged across the seabed until they penetrate and embed themselves to their design depth below the seabed. They are commonly used in offshore oil and gas operations, marine construction, and various offshore renewable energy projects. This study has been performed for the installation of an 18 metric tonne DEA in shallow waterdepth. The ballast weighted design ensures the anchor easily seats on the seabed - ready to be embedded. Along these lines are wind turbines, which transform wind into clean and sustainable electrical energy. Its basic operating principle is similar to that of a weather vane, where air currents move the blades and these, in turn, rotate a rotor coupled to a generator, responsible for transforming mechanical energy into electrical energy. And the larger these blades are, the greater the turbine's generating capacity. Therefore, it is possible to see generators that are incredible 140 meters high. And as you can imagine, these will often be affected by atmospheric discharges. In the absence of adequate specific protection, small or large physical damages to the blades can occur, mainly fires in the nacelles, which are the parts where the rotation and power generation equipment is located. Accidents like these can cause millions of dollars in losses, both from equipment that will be compromised and the interruption of energy production. Therefore, it is extremely important that all wind generators have a complete lightning protection system. After defining the level of protection, it is necessary to design the SPDA, which will largely depend on what the structure of the wind turbine will be like. As there are metallic, concrete and mixed wind towers, knowing their format is essential to optimize protection against lightning. This is because an entirely metallic tower only needs to have its electrical continuity ensured to serve as a natural SPDA element. Concrete towers, on the other hand, need some care, as they are built in modules or staves. This is why they need to have connection points and electrical continuity inside.
