The River Humber, into which several rivers discharge their waters, is regarded as a dividing line between the North of England and the South of England. Goole, Immingham, Kingston-upon-Hull and Grimsby are three of the main commercial ports on the River Humber. The River Ancholme, the River Trent and the Yorkshire Ouse are among the rivers that drain into the River Humber while the Sheffield and South Yorkshire Navigation as well as the Aire and Calder Navigation also discharge into the great river. Traditional barges that operate on the River Humber and its tributaries include sloops, with fore-and-aft rigs, and square-rigged keels. Sail power on the commercial waterways of England declined during the twentieth-century, due to the widespread availability of diesel engines, and the traditional sailing craft became a distant memory. Steam power, too, had contributed to the decline of sail power in the nineteenth-century. It was believed, during the era of the two Word Wars, that the conversion of the inland commercial fleet from wind propulsion to motor power would improve the economy. Owners of Humber sloops and keels, therefore, were encouraged to install diesel engines and screw propellers. A sense of romanticism about the past, however, as well as a desire to preserve history emerged in the later twentieth-century and efforts were made to restore the traditional rigs of Humber sailing barges. Modern reconstructions of Humber keels and sloops, which include Annie Barraclough as well as Spider T, retain their fuel-burning engines and propellers but are the closest thing to a traditional sailing barge that can be found on the modern waterways. Renewed interest in sail power, for commercial use, has arisen due to the high levels of carbon emissions generated by fuel-burning merchant vessels. #InlandWaterways #SailCargo #RiverHumber https://lnkd.in/eGgKRCGt

"We had 19 men tied off to pieces of metal hanging there waiting for the next piece. Being able to maneuver the load without taglines and with precision ensured that the crew was able to place it without taking their hands off their spot, maintaining 3-point contact. When we went back to the project for the second time, the guys said they wouldn't do it again unless the VLN was there." -Randy Leroux, Branch Manager Sterling Crane Have you ever wondered how transmission towers are constructed? It's no easy feat. Sterling Crane faced a massive challenge: Connecting a dam to the British Columbia Hydro power grid. Lifting enormous 42,000-pound triangular structures (that often behave like giant sails in high winds), they dealt with a congested construction site, and a pressing need for innovative solutions. Sterling Crane's first encounter with the VLN occurred during a demonstration organized by Cross Country Canada Supplies & Rentals, one of Vita's distributors, in Alberta. They decided to give it a try and the results were nothing short of remarkable. The Vita Load Navigator not only provided enhanced safety measures but also allowed for precise load control, streamlining the entire process. Ahoy, MinRes Airlie! We have taken delivery of our first transhipper for the Onslow Iron project, following successful sea trials. The innovative Articulated Tug and Barge system was tested, along with a range of maneuvers including speed, turning angles, time to stop and checks of the navigation and mechanical systems. MinRes Airlie is expected to arrive at the Port of Ashburton in the coming months, with transhipping operations to commence mid-year. Read more: https://lnkd.in/gqDZewuj
