Where does creativity and commercial meet? This has been a hot subject over the course of the last year. We’ve noticed a dramatic increase in the desire to hire specific Business Development and Salespeople at the senior level. As well as the use of design-specific PR to drive new business efforts. We’ve also seen a shift this year when it comes to the core responsibilities of new Creative Director hires. Rather than the primary focus of leading work and maintaining great client relationships. A big plus has been looking for people who have functional sales and new business capabilities. Thought for the day: If you were starting up a revenue team for an ad-supported company today, you might want to mostly staff with smart early-career talent who know how to use prospecting and outreach tools to scale high-effort comms into brands that precisely fit the ICP. You probably wouldn’t go out and hire a national team of sellers with ten years of direct media sales experience and relationships, though you might have one or two folks like that in player/coach roles. The reality today is that as hard as the media business is, the silver lining is that the entire revenue function can and should be built for less expense than it used to require. Not to say that experience isn’t important, just that it’s not doing the majority of the work needed to drive meaningful new pipeline in the modern landscape; a single human’s handful of past relationships aren’t enough.

Spending 200+% of Sales & Marketing for every Net New ARR Dollar Believing you'll recruit Unicorn candidates from Job posts Requiring twelve-plus year Sales Director candidates to perform a discovery call in an interview panel Not coaching and mentoring employees who deliver less than 20% of plan/ productivity and/or not replacing them. Spending exorbitant marketing dollars chasing ecosystem partners at user conferences when your solution needs to be integrated and partner-approved in their marketplace, ........hoping scanned leads will buy.
