The King's Fund published a video which explains how #NHS works, what are the key organisations and most importantly how they collaborate with partners in the health and care system to deliver joined-up care. By setting up #IntegratedCareSystems (ICS) as legal entities, they now have the budget and formal mandate to transform care on a regional level. 👉🏽 What do these changes look like?  Integrated care partnerships bring the NHS together with other key partners, like local authorities, to develop a strategy to enable the integrated care system to improve health and well-being in its area. 👉🏽 How are these new structures funded?  The Department of Health and Social Care sets out what the NHS is expected to deliver for the money it gets from the government – which comes from our taxes. It also holds budgets for some of the other areas that have an impact on our well-being, like public health. 👉🏽 What does this all mean in practice?  The Health and Care Act has put in place a legal framework that enables services to work more closely together, so it’s easier for you and I to receive the care we need, when and where we need it. For these changes to succeed, staff and local leaders will have to work with one another differently, alongside key partners in local government, the voluntary sector, and communities themselves. Dr Layla McCay, director of policy at the NHS Confederation responds to The King's Fund report on primary and community care, 'Making care closer to home a reality': "This important report reflects much of what we hear from our members, and is therefore a key focus of NHS leaders asks for the next government. "We know from analysis we published last year that the economic case for investing in primary and community care is clear. Every £1 invested in these services brings back £14 to the economy in gross value added (GVA). Investing upstream is critical for the sustainability of services and reducing pressure on hospitals and moving to more preventative models of care. "But most critically of all, our members know that it’s best for patients – the majority of whom, particularly in the context of an aging population and increasing multi-morbidity – are best cared for in the community with their support systems close by. #Healthcare administrative bloat and inefficiency are rampant. While I have respect for many aspects of the VA healthcare system, I had not considered administrative efficiency to be one of them. This piece has me questioning my likely false assumptions and creates a different perspective. It represents a system that has the patient (a veteran) at the center of a team-based primary care network with a more holistic lens. VA hospitals outperform non-VA hospitals on 10 core patient satisfaction metrics in a recent Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems Star Ratings. In the private sector health care system, we often only addresses the patient’s chief complaint, focusing on the current illness or acute issue. Ensuring a patient’s well-being requires the integration of the physical, psychological, social, and economic aspects of health and a thorough understanding of how these factors impact treatment compliance which the VA does much better than the rest of US healthcare. Physician burnout is a concerning issue that is affecting healthcare facilities of all sizes across the country.
