Did you know that researchers estimate that by 2030, almost 1 million individuals in Canada will be diagnosed with dementia? January is Alzheimer's Awareness Month in Canada, and we invite you to learn more about what HSC Foundation donors are doing to support those who are living with chronic illness or disease like Alzheimer’s. The HSC Foundation and the University of Manitoba partnered to fund a new, $3-million research chair in technology for assisted living. Thanks to HSC Foundation donors’ contribution of $1.5 million and UM donors’ contribution of $1.5 million, we recently announced the appointment of Dr. Jacquie Ripat, associate professor of occupational therapy, College of Rehabilitation Sciences, and vice-dean (academic affairs), Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, as the Endowed Chair in Technology for Assisted Living. Among other areas, efforts in technology for assisted living aid those who are living with Alzheimer’s, and older adults wishing to remain living independently. Can you help? A group of UK’s foremost dementia experts, The Geller Commission, is working on an independent review, a nationwide public consultation, into dementia-related hospital stays. It is providing a platform for anyone impacted by dementia to have their say about dementia-related hospital occupancy. The commission is looking into: 1 Preventative methods to avoid hospitalisation and empower care providers to act. 2 Improving care for people with dementia during their hospital stay. 3 Identifying barriers to a timely or appropriate discharge. The open letter states: “We invite input from everyone across the spectrum, from nurses to neurologists, caregivers to those receiving care. Local government, charities, public health bodies, and carers all have a crucial role in supporting those living with dementia, and we seek your lived experiences to guide our review.” The stats are scary. About 25% of hospitals beds re occupied by people living with dementia and readmission rates are more than double. If you can improve the lives of those living with dementia, please visit https://lnkd.in/g_R7CyaX Tapestry Day Club provides day care with a difference across Surrey and West Sussex. At the 18th Annual Congress on Controversies in Neurology (CONy 2024) ADI CEO Paola Barbarino discussed with Video Journal of Dementia (VJDementia) about investment in #dementia and Alzheimer's disease therapeutics. She also expressed concerns that patients are being denied their human right to make informed decisions about their treatment options due to access issues. As populations age, dementia is set to become an even more significant health challenge and is currently the 7th leading cause of death globally. #DementiaTreatments #TimeToActOnDementia #WhatsYourPlan #ADI
In the second extract from the interview I talked about in my post yesterday, I raise concerns about the awareness, accessibility, and affordability of new disease-modifying therapies. High costs may prevent reimbursement for those who could benefit. Even before considering treatment costs, global diagnostic capabilities represent a huge barrier, with many healthcare systems lacking the resources and trained clinicians for accurate and timely diagnosis. I also highlight the scarcity of medical professionals who recognize dementia as a disease, citing the 2019 World Alzheimer’s Report where 62% of respondents did not view dementia as a disease, but a normal part of aging. The lack of understanding extends beyond the general public, affecting medical communities and contributing to the stigma surrounding dementia. This interview took place at the 18th Annual Congress on Controversies in Neurology (CONy 2024) in London, UK and is referring to a broader lecture I gave on the subject. https://lnkd.in/eeqci9CA

Public engagement plays an important role in the work of physicians and researchers. It is essential to develop contact points between health professionals and citizens outside the fast-paced environment of the hospitals. It is also vital to establish effective communication, free of the jargon of academia. In Modena, each year we dedicate a day to public engagement to promote the latest knowledge in the field of dementia. We also express our gratitude to all the individuals with lived experiences and their families, whose interest and participation make our research projects and clinical trials possible. The third edition of this initiative will be held on Saturday, February 17th, and there will be plenty of information! Silvia Cossutti will present on the clinical trials for Alzheimer’s disease and frontotemporal dementia that are currently active at our centre. Chiara Gallingani will discuss the role of neurofilaments in assessing the causes of cognitive decline. Finally, I will talk about the evidence synthesis process and share the results of a systematic review on the prognosis of mild cognitive impairment. Underdiagnosis of dementia, especially among Black and Hispanic patients, is a long-standing challenge in medicine. A new study, published today in Nature Medicine, finds that an easy, five-minute assessment paired with recommendations built into the electronic medical record system led to a three-fold improvement in diagnosis and treatment for patients in a primary care setting compared to a control group. The “5-Cog paradigm,” which was developed by researchers at Einstein and Montefiore Health System, dramatically enhances the diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment and dementia, and represents a new, better way to guide initial treatment.
