NEW content published in The BMJ’s weekly series examining the lessons from America’s covid-19 response to prepare for future health crises and protect public health. This week, Mary Bassett and Justin Feldman describe how diminished political will to use government powers for service provision hampered the US response to the covid-19 pandemic, and what needs to change. The covid-19 burden in the US was among the worst globally. America’s pandemic response was also uniquely fractured: public health measures varied across states, social and health protections failed, and communication was poor, exacerbating existing social and financial inequalities, all of which were underlined by racial inequities. What can be learned from covid-19 and what actions are needed to prevent the loss of another million citizens in the next pandemic and to improve population health more broadly? Check out the weekly Series in The BMJ, with articles by Helene Gayle, Michelle Mello, David Michaels, Steve Morrison, Saskia Popescu PhD, MPH, MA, FAPIC, and our guest editors Gavin Yamey and Ana Diez-Roux. https://lnkd.in/emWQyVQ3 Jocalyn Clark Kamran Abbasi #PandemicPreparedness #CovidResponse #healthequity #UShealth #covid19 #publishing #2024election

As someone who leads an active, healthy lifestyle, I find it frustrating that tools like BMI label me as "overweight." It's clear that BMI, a metric rooted in outdated, racist and biased perspectives, perpetuates weight stigma and fails to capture the true complexity of health. We need to move away from simplistic "healthy" vs. "unhealthy" weight labels and the reliance on BMI, and other similar tools in health communications and research. By doing so, we can create a more inclusive and meaningful understanding of health that empowers individuals to feel comfortable in their own skin and discuss their health concerns with their doctors - without just hearing they need to lose weight. Hopefully, this change is one of many that will help lead our healthcare system into a welcoming and shame-free environment. #HealthAtEverySize #WeightStigma #HolisticHealth #InclusiveHealthcare #BodyPositivity #BeyondBMI

Very interesting new research from The Health Foundation on public attitudes to health and care policy. Conducted just before the general election was called, the study reveals key insights: 🔍 Most people are in favour of a bolder stance on public health policymaking. 🔍 Supporters of the Labour party show higher approval for initiatives like minimum alcohol pricing and taxes on unhealthy foods. 🔍 The findings suggest room for the Government to go further in promoting population health and reducing health inequalities.

🌐 Public Health Spending Disparities Across States: Long COVID Perspective 🚨 States vary significantly in their allocation of funds towards public health, especially concerning Long COVID. This divergence in spending impacts the ability to address and mitigate the challenges posed by long-term COVID effects. As we navigate these disparities, let's advocate for equitable distribution of resources, ensuring that every state has the necessary support to tackle the complexities of Long COVID. Together, we can work towards a more unified and resilient public health landscape. 💪💙 #PublicHealth #LongCOVID #EquitableSupport
