Each year, approximately 800,000 people in the U.S. suffer a stroke. Did you know that the Timmins and District Hospital (TADH) is a proud partner in the Ontario Stroke System and the Northeastern Ontario Stroke Network? As a District Stroke Centre, TADH is the “Hub” for patients across the continuum of stroke care in our community and district. The stroke program provides care through: • Stroke Prevention Clinic - The goal of the clinic is to reduce the incidence of stroke. It provides early assessment and appropriate interventions and rapid access to diagnostic tests. This clinic also provides education and support to patients and family members about their risk factor management and stroke prevention. • Integrated Stroke Unit - The goal of this unit is to determine and treat the effects of a patient’s stroke. For example, weakness or paralysis, difficulty swallowing, speaking, understanding, reading, writing, learning and/or remembering. If you are admitted to the ISU, our care team will help determine why you had a stroke, help lower your risk of having another stroke and provide rehabilitation, if appropriate. If you suspect that you, or someone you love, may be having a stroke, call 911 immediately. Use the FAST acronym for a stroke guide: Face - is it drooping? Arms - can you raise both? Stroke is the 5th cause of death and a leading cause of disability in the United States. It occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or bursts. When that happens, part of the brain cannot get the blood and oxygen it needs, so brain cells die. Early stroke detection and treatment are key to improving survival, minimizing disability, and accelerating recovery times. What happens during a stroke? According to the National Stroke Association, stroke is a leading cause of death, killing nearly 130,000 people each year, and is a leading cause of serious, long-term adult disability. Stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain is disrupted by a blood clot or damaged blood vessel. The lack of blood flow kills brain cells quickly. Damaged or dead brain cells do not regenerate. For the best outcome, quality stroke care must be delivered quickly to save as many brain cells as possible. Blessing Hospital is a nationally recognized Primary Stroke Center, affirming the hospital’s readiness and ability to provide the highest quality stroke-related healthcare, which includes diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and education. During 2023, more than 370 people came to Blessing Hospital for stroke-related care, nearly 230 community residents took advantage of stroke-related health screenings and 970 people received stroke education through printed materials and in-person presentations. As a paramedic, Hazel knows how she and her crewmates often feel worried when they are called out to see someone who may have had a stroke. "When I was on the road it was scary to see something very obvious was wrong with someone but yet you can't do anything about it, it's frustrating having the inability to make it better. Many things can mimic a stroke so when you see a patient it can be hard to tell if it's a stroke or not." Hazel now works for University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, managing a stroke research team at a Hyper Acute Stroke Unit. She knew that there was already a lateral flow test being developed for concussion and she realised how helpful it would be to have something similar for diagnosing strokes. "We were talking about brain injury and I thought, if we can do this for brain injury caused by trauma, why can't we do this for stroke?" Since then, Hazel has been one of the GHoSt team working alongside Professor Antonio Belli, developing a potentially life-saving new test that could diagnose stroke through a saliva test. “I'm excited this has come to fruition. We anticipate that the science will support our idea and my colleagues believe it will." The team’s ideal outcome is that not only will the test be able to tell if someone's having a stroke, but also what type they are having. "Stroke is underrepresented, yet it has such an impact on someone's life once they've had one. It's also important to diagnose stroke as quickly as we can, and if it's a bleed or a clot, because if we give them the wrong treatment it will make things worse, but the right treatment makes the biggest difference." Hazel is looking forward to the future of this project and how this test will support paramedics when seeing potential stroke patients. "It will be a great feeling to give paramedics an additional tool in their toolbox so we can do more than just take people to hospital." This research is being funded by us. May is National Stroke Awareness Month! As we bring awareness to strokes this month, we would like to emphasize the importance of recognizing their signs and symptoms. The acronym "BE FAST" is a simple and easy one to telltale signs of a stroke. B: Balance The "B" stands for balance. Balance is included in the acronym to remind us that some strokes may present with subtle problems that are important not to miss. These can vary from person to person, but the most apparent issues are sudden loss of balance, dizziness, and lack of coordination. E: Eyes. F: Face. The “E” and “F” go hand in hand with each other, and they stand for eyes and face, respectively. We can tell if someone is suffering from a stroke by asking if they are experiencing vision loss or if their face has become asymmetrical due to loss of muscle control. A: Arms. The “A” within the acronym stands for arms. This represents the numbness that may occur within the arms and legs during a stroke due to a lack of muscle control. S: Speech The “S” stands for speech. When someone is suffering from a stroke, their speech can become slurred and their ability to use basic pronunciation skills can be hindered. T: Time The “T” found within stands for time. This part of the acronym is supposed to remind a bystander that time is an important factor in any medical situation. The faster we can get someone's medical attention, the higher the chances of survival! If you recognize any of these signs, immediately call 911. Driving yourself or your loved one or visiting a primary care physician can cause a delay in care, thus worsening possible outcomes
