Proud to be among my colleagues in medicine and the C-suite, Linda Komnick, Steven Kalkanis MD, and Charles F. Barbera, MD, MBA, MPH, FACEP, FAAEM. As an oncologist, the foundational relationship that I have with a patient is based on mutual trust, which allows me to deliver care. The power of my voice as the CEO, and the influence both internally and externally, is still predicated on that foundational concept of trust. When I see patients, I ask about more than their symptoms. I want to know about their experience with the valet parking, the cafeteria, their inpatient hospital room. Healthcare System Set To Break Ground on New Hospital in Suburban San Antonio University Health of San Antonio is set to commence construction on a new five-story, 589,743-square-foot hospital in Selma, Texas, starting March 17, with completion targeted for September 17, 2026. Named University Health Retama Hospital, the project, estimated at $480 million—lower than an initial $600 million projection—marks a significant expansion for the healthcare provider. The hospital aims to open in late 2026 or early 2027, offering comprehensive services including a 24/7 emergency department, labor and delivery, radiology, pharmacy, neonatal intensive care, and more, within a facility that initially provides 166 beds, with potential expansion to 286. Strategically located along the Austin-San Antonio corridor, this development underscores the ongoing economic impact of the healthcare industry in the region, which contributes over $44 billion annually. University Health, distinct from the similarly named entity involved with Cano Health, underscores its commitment to enhancing medical infrastructure and services in Bexar County and its surrounding area. Introducing our most recent guest to the Healthcare Rebel Alliance series: Clifford Porter, founder of Texas Direct Medical Care. As Nick Soman shared, Dr. Porter is a true healthcare pioneer. After serving as an Army doctor, he went on to earn a PhD in European history and political philosophy, bringing a unique interdisciplinary perspective to medicine. In his own words, he "left his studies under Socrates to go work for Hippocrates." Now, as the founder of a thriving Direct Primary Care (DPC) practice, Dr. Porter is redefining what it means to put patients first. As he explains, "Most clinics are managed to focus on billing and volume, [but] our first concerns are medical rather than financial. Since DPC is paid on membership, we can simply practice medicine. The DPC model takes money out of the exam room and no longer interferes with the patient-physician relationship. Practicing medicine in the DPC model is fun; I take care of my friends every day." I was so excited to speak with Dr. Hardeep Singh, a patient safety researcher and Professor of Medicine. For students or physicians who are seeking to impact the systemic forces shaping medical care, this is an inspiring episode. --Dr. Singh is Co-Chief of the Health Policy, Quality, and Informatics Program at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center and Baylor College of Medicine. --One of the things that struck me during our conversation was how his career has been so mission-driven, starting with his observation of missed diagnoses during his years of practice as an internist in rural East Texas. Those experiences inspired him to seek out a research career, and later helped guide his efforts to impact policy. --His research on how to improve missed/delayed diagnoses has impacted many, and his research on how to improve the use of electronic health records (EHRs) has been used as the basis for policy changes by the Center for Medicare Services (CMS). He has also worked with the World Health Organization on patient safety issues. --At the same time, although he is very mission-driven, he describes how important perseverance and discipline have been throughout his career. --As he explains, it took him several years and 12 failed grant applications before he was finally able to move into his career as a researcher. --When I asked him what kept him going, he described his passion for the area of patient safety, but he also emphasized the importance of perseverance and the discipline to keep submitting grant applications. --He is also deeply committed to translating research findings into policy change, and he talks about the associated challenges. --To hear more, please see the link to the episode in the comments

Driving growth and efficiency in clinical services is not enough.
