On 26 February, we had a preliminary meeting with the delegation of State Tourism Committe of the Republic of #Uzbekistan led by First Deputy Chairman Mr. Jamshid Abdusalomov to discuss the arrangements for the festivities of designation of #Shakhrisabz city as the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) Tourism Capital 2024 to be held on 25-27 April 2024. After awarding the official certificate during the opening ceremony, the festivities will keep going with panel sessions, folk festivals, gastronomy competitions, nomadic games, and painting exhibitions which will showcase this ancient city's various attractions. #Shakhrisabz, often referred to as a hidden gem, is rich in history, culture, and architectural marvels, making it a must-visit destination. The city was once home to the legendary #Timurid dynasty and boasts historical sites such as the Aksaray Palace and Dorus Saodat Ensemble, which attract tourists from around the world. Beyond its historical offerings, Shakhrisabz also provides access to breathtaking natural landscapes, including the #Kizilkum Desert and the Gumbaz-Sangin Mountain. #Nature lovers and adventure seekers will find their paradise here. Additionally, the local markets offer a unique shopping experience, featuring traditional #Uzbek handicrafts, textiles, and delicacies, allowing #tourists to immerse themselves in the local culture and support artisans. It is essential to promote responsible and sustainable #tourism practices to preserve the city's beauty and significance for future generations as well as the other cities in the ECO region such as Dushanbe in #Tajikistan, Sari and Ardabil in #Iran which have been honoured with this title in recent years. Through the ECO Tourism Capitals initiative, which is becoming increasingly recognised and noteworthy, it is aimed to bring together regional and global stakeholders in the tourism sector, while aiming to bring one city from ECO Member States to the forefront in tourism promotion each year. Erzurum from #Türkiye will be honoured with this title next year and Shusha from #Azerbaijan in 2026.
