One small step in personnel vetting reform is one giant leap in government operational efficiency. That’s a key takeaway from Matt Eanes’ remarks at this week’s #coffeeconvo with the Intelligence and National Security Alliance. Trusted Workforce 2.0 is a government success story, in large part due to the work of brilliant brains like Matt, Mark Frownfelter at National Counterintelligence and Security Center, and others. And also because Trusted Workforce is a rare example of government getting feedback from industry as they go - I even remember them letting me do an early interview with Brian Dunbar and Mark when ODNI was first rolling it out - trust me when I say, bringing in ClearanceJobs to discuss a government reform effort hadn’t happened before. Listening tours have kept the engagement going. Government gotta government - the process is not where it needs to be, and we’ll be hearing more about that in congressional hearings in the next few weeks. But as we spotlight what is broken we shouldn’t forget what is going well. The nuance is hard to appreciate, but it’s significant. There is a broader effort here and NBIS is a part of that - it’s time for NBIS to pick up its slack so the policy writers can take a nap - and we can actually start implementing some of the next stages of the effort, like the PVQ. Thanks to SIMS Software and Michael Struttmann for spotlighting these critical efforts. Everyone in national security needs to care about personnel vetting. And tune into INSA’s next webinar in the series in August with our favorite recovering analyst David Cattler - it should be a nice palate cleanser from his next month of engagements on the Hill. Defense Counterintelligence and Security Agency (DCSA) has played a monumental role in implementing Trusted Workforce, and remains vital in this next critical stage. Spotlighting issues is good, but I’m hoping Congress takes a pickax and not a sledgehammer as it analyzes the Trusted Workforce effort.
