REALITY: It’s the ability to adapt, learn quickly, and navigate diverse situations that sets great Chiefs of Staff apart. MYTH: Technical skills are more important than people skills. REALITY: Strong interpersonal skills are vital for influence and collaboration. MYTH: You need an MBA to be a good chief of staff. REALITY: While MBAs might be helpful in some situations, it’s not essential for the role and certainly not required. MYTH: Chiefs of Staff have no authority. REALITY: Chiefs of Staff hold significant influence. MYTH: The role is the same in every organization. REALITY: Responsibilities vary greatly by industry, sector, stage, size, organization, and even your principal’s particular needs. In my journey as a Chief of Staff, I’ve heard all the myths but have found that the reality of this role is in the balance between strategic execution and empathetic leadership. Who are the right team members to make it all GO?
