Grateful to have participated in the Radiological Emergency Management program at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health Executive and Continuing Education. This program, led by distinguished experts from Harvard, MIT, and other leading institutions, provided invaluable insights into the planning, response, and recovery from radiological emergencies. A particularly impactful aspect of the program was the in-depth discussion on the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Accident. While this event often draws attention due to its scale, the program explored the less-discussed but equally consequences and continuing recovery challenges. Having personally worked on the decommissioning of TEPCO’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station and the broader reconstruction efforts, I found these discussions especially meaningful. The comparison between Japan’s recovery strategies and the U.S. approach to radiological preparedness was enlightening, offering new perspectives on how to enhance our own processes. This opportunity to reflect on the complexities of post-accident recovery, beyond the immediate crisis, was invaluable. It was also inspiring to learn from professionals who excel in communicating complex scientific information to the public and to see the professionalism of MIT students managing their Reactor Facility. The practical exercises on radiological event response and communication were both enlightening. Thankful for this incredible learning opportunity and eager to apply these lessons in my work.
