HBR, it is too early on a Friday morning to be coming after my insecurities like this. 😂 But also, thank you, Emma Waldman! This is a interesting article that is grounded in practical advice.

This morning Maggie Mitchell at SiriusXM joined my class at New York University to discuss her role in #CorporateCommunications, and why it's important to recognize you don't have to pick one passion in life. There were so many great lessons baked into Maggie's presentation (and she's definitely a crowd favorite that will be returning!), but a couple of takeaways that resonated with me are: 1. You don't always get the dream job at first. When I graduated from college I...didn't have a job lined up. I spent hours day after day in local coffee shops and libraries applying to internships on LinkedIn. (I even began studying for my real estate license in-case a career in communications didn't pan out.) And I hustled once I got a job. I said yes to everything for my clients. Bringing coffee and donuts to newsrooms. Delivering pizza in Brooklyn. Finding iced teas and dragging them into the city from my apartment in Rockland County. A client or manager asked, I did it. Working on a new business pitch? Yes, I absolutely am interested in working on that pitch! I also didn't give up. When I applied to Ruder Finn I interviewed with a team and didn't get the job. That sucked. Weeks later another role came up on another team, and I got a job offer. I applied to more jobs than I could count at Edelman. It took years interviewing for three different roles for me to land a job there. None of these were final a "no," it was just a "no" for right now. 2. Connections matter. The point of my guest speakers are to help my students build a professional network to lean on before they even have to. I cannot stress enough how incredible of a platform LinkedIn has been for me to build meaningful connections with people, relationships that have resulted in job offers for myself or others. Talk to people. A door might look closed but someone might be on their way to open it. And if you haven't checked out SiriusXM's Channel 13 (Taylor’s Version) yet, please do so immediately. Seriously. Go do it. #CareerAdvice #CareerTips

summer months offer a unique opportunity to connect with your #relationships (clients, prospects, or referral sources) in different and unexpected ways. ☀ this #summer, engage with your clients and contacts in a completely different way. let people know that you are genuinely thinking about them without expecting anything in return. often, #businessdevelopment and #marketing outreach involve an expectation of an immediate response, an acceptance of an invitation, or a return communication. give without expectation that anyone “owes” you something. over the next few weeks, we will post additional summer connection ideas. ⛱ #1. send a summer card. just as you send holiday cards during the winter season, send a thoughtful summertime card. the unexpected timing will stand out. let us know if you have a favorite summer #businessdevelopment activity.

I rarely get personal on here, but I thought this was important to share. Summer is usually the busiest time of year for me at work (but let’s be real, university recruiting is busy year-round!). With summer comes our intern program, the best time of the year! However, this summer brought lots of twists and turns. My dad passed away suddenly from cancer, just a week before my second group of interns started. I took time off, and my manager Matthew Naughton and Alex Khoury immediately stepped in, telling me to focus on my family and not to worry about work. Yesterday, I was supposed to host our intern showcase for our marketing interns (one of the best parts of my role, getting to see all the work our interns have accomplished over the summer). My husband, a first responder, was called out to an active shooter situation. It was terrifying to watch the scene unfold on TV, knowing someone I love was facing it head-on. With barely any updates, I felt helpless. I knew I couldn’t focus and wanted to give our interns the best experience for their showcase, so I called in the help of a few colleagues, Chris, ec, and Corey. Without hesitation, ec took the lead and told me to focus on my family. Today, I connected with my manager again, and he told me to take some time and focus on my family, not to worry about work. He reminded me that there are so many bigger things in life than our work, and it’s okay to put yourself and your family first. I am incredibly grateful for the work-life balance and the people-first culture here at Teradata that Kathy Cullen-Cote has worked so hard to create. With all this being said, I want to send a message to all emerging talent out there, whether you’re an intern returning to school or just entering the workforce: when you’re interviewing, ask about the company culture and dig a little deeper. Can you visualize yourself in that culture? If you were faced with a tough scenario, what would the response look and feel like to you? Would it be, “Don’t worry about work, focus on your family”? If not, I encourage you to find another company and another role. Look for people-first companies that truly value their employees’ well-being.
