When you approach the final and last run of your career years like, you know - the 4th quarter, one begins to think differently about what to do with the final time on the clock. We rarely talk about the R word because who actually retires these days? One thing I know for sure is that every day I'm grateful for lessons learned throughout my career, and it's a very long list of lessons that I keep adding to. Today I'm grateful for learning from the agency side of the business that, if you only give Clients what they ask for, you're probably not going to be in business very long. Thank you to all the creative people particularly at The Martin Agency who instilled that in me and my belief system. Maybe that's why I don't make a good "request-fulfiller," as I do my best to exceed expectations, and to be a good thought partner in helping clients solve their most critical challenges. And I'm also grateful for the first company I ever worked for, a F500 conglomerate. Recently someone told me that I have a management consulting approach in advising clients. Wait, what? Me? The comment made me reflect back on my career as to where that approach may have come in to play. The conglomerate's CEO formerly worked at Booz Allen Hamilton, and we had hired BAH to help us with business growth and extensive M&A expansion leading to record sales/net earnings for 25 years in a row. It's possible that I unknowingly picked it up from those execs that influenced the first 9 years of the 1st quarter of my career. The head of corporate accounting was my favorite as he was the consummate manager. I remember once writing a paper about him. He was young but his joints were riddled with 4th-stage rheumatoid arthritis yet he played squash every day at lunch, and was so intrumental in advancing technology even back then. He made coffee for us every morning, and I tried to beat him to the office to do it for him as he could barely hold on to the thermos. You know, the old stainless and glass green kind. Bottom line, I'm grateful to all those past and present who have helped me succeed in helping others succeed. Nearly two years ago, the seemingly impossible happened… I transitioned industries after almost 16 years, also going from agency life to corporate. Fast forward to today and not only did I survive that change - quickly learning more than I thought possible in a short period of time - I’m thrilled to share that I thrived, now taking on a leadership role at Lockheed Martin as the C6ISR Communications Senior Manager. As I reflect upon my professional journey during this transition period, a few key learnings stand out: 💡Industry knowledge can be taught, personal characteristics cannot. Find a company/employee that fits with the work culture and desired skill set. Shoutout to Maureen Schumann who took a chance on me - a candidate who may not have been perfect on paper but she saw potential beyond a resume. Mo set the standard as an exceptional leader/mentor, leaving big shoes to fill. 👩🚀Surround yourself with leaders who inspire, empower and challenge you to reach your highest potential. I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to support Amr Hussein, who like many of our leaders at Lockheed Martin, truly care about the people he works with and champions their success. Culture comes from the top, down. 👏🏻Give yourself grace. It’s ok to fail as sometimes what you learn is of greater value. During my first months at Lockheed Martin, our SVP and CCO Dean Acosta reminded our comms team that the only people who don't experience imposter syndrome are actual imposters. Embrace change; don't be afraid to fail fast and grow. 👭🏼Co-workers can have a profound impact on job satisfaction and performance. Robin Peak, Katie Bridge, Megan Boland, and Audrey Gryak are second to none. I'm constantly impressed by this team's incredible talent, support and creativity. We build each other up, not down. Expect incredible things from the C6ISR comms team in 2024! There's a reason Lockheed Martin frequently comes up as a top employer.
