When you’re assessing your work set-up, take your time. Look above, below, in front of, behind, and to the sides of your work area. Then, go beyond assessing just in relation to your body – look all around heavy equipment and other items in your work area to ensure there’s nothing potentially hazardous in the vicinity. However, there is a time to act quickly on a construction site- when as incident occurs. This doesn’t mean you should rush to take action. It’s important to act quickly to tend to an injury, and you need to be prepared to do so correctly. Otherwise, chaotic rushing can create more problems. When an incident occurs, it can be tempting to address only the immediate issue and get back to work. However, an assessment of what more should be done to prevent future incidents is important. Don’t fall prey to the assumption that only the affected individual and their actions are to blame – a different, safer set-up on a jobsite or around equipment can prevent many accidents. Use your questioning attitude, discuss the situation with colleagues to get additional perspectives, and make the changes needed to improve the safety of the work area.
