This Indigenous Peoples Day, we celebrate the strength and resilience of Native American communities, honor their rich cultures and traditions, while also recognizing the challenges some of their children with disabilities face. With less access to healthcare, education, and transportation, Native American children and families do not always get the support they need to thrive. In celebrating the diversity of Indigenous Peoples, we are also raising awareness about the disparities and the need for more inclusive support systems. Let's look forward to a future where every child, regardless of their background, receives the care and support they deserve. This post encourages people living with disabilities to proudly identify as part of the disability community. Over 75 to 80% of the disabilities community has hidden or invisible disabilities. Our aim is to increase visibility and discoverability by employers, funders, partners, and investors. Ruh Global IMPACT has created the world's first identity and pride organization called Billion Strong, www.Billion-Strong.org, to unite the disability community, which is 1.3 to 1.7 billion strong. Our grassroots efforts, aim to show the value and brilliance of the disability community. All are welcome. We want people with lived experiences with disabilities, our friends, family, caregivers, and allies to join, emphasizing that inclusion benefits everyone. Breaking Free: The Right Way to Close Institutions 🔓🏘️ Institutions are more than just walls. They're a mindset that segregates and limits people with disabilities. We've seen promises of change, but often new forms of institutions crop up in disguise - tiny homes, congregate housing, segregated communities. 🏚️ These are not real solutions. They perpetuate the cycle of isolation and marginalization. 🚫 True inclusion means supporting people to live in diverse communities, with autonomy, dignity and access to individualized supports. It's a fundamental human right. 🌈🗳️ Deinstitutionalization must be done the right way: 🔹 Led by people with disabilities, especially institution survivors 🔹 Guided by the UN CRPD and human rights principles 🔹 Focused on creating real homes and inclusive communities, not just closing buildings 🔹 Carefully planned for each individual's needs and choices The path forward is challenging but filled with hope and possibility.
