Recent insights from Andrew Rae and David Provan's work highlight an essential distinction that every professional in our field should understand: the difference between "safety work" and "the safety of work." Safety Work encompasses activities designed to manage safety within our organizations. This includes safety moments, toolbox talks, and safety method statements. These activities are crucial for demonstrating our commitment to safety, both internally and to external stakeholders. However, they often serve a dual purpose: ensuring we appear safe, and actually making us safer. The Safety of Work, on the other hand, is about the real-world prevention of injuries and accidents. It's the tangible outcome of effective safety practices integrated into our daily operations. This is where the rubber meets the road, and where our efforts must ultimately focus to protect our teams and assets. In the oil and gas industry, balancing these two aspects are critical. Here are a few strategic recommendations to ensure we get it right: Integration: Seamlessly integrate safety work (social, demonstrated, administrative) with operational safety practices. This ensures that our safety activities are not just for show but have a real impact on the ground. Assessment: Regularly assess the effectiveness of safety activities to ensure they contribute to genuine safety improvements. This helps in identifying areas where safety work can be streamlined or enhanced. Focus on Outcomes: Shift the focus from merely performing safety work to achieving measurable safety outcomes. It's not enough to check the boxes; we need to see real-world results. Training and Engagement: Invest in training programs that emphasize the importance of both safety work and operational safety. Engage employees at all levels to foster a culture of safety that goes beyond compliance. By understanding and applying these principles, we can navigate the complexities of safety management in our industry, ensuring we meet regulatory standards and, more importantly, protect our people and operations. #IOGP SAFETY TRENDS AND RESPONSES SURVEY - SOME INTERESTING OBSERVATIONS THAT REQUIRE ATTENTION In May 2022, the IOGP Safety Committee published a statement defining its strategic objectives and identifying key focus areas to achieve those objectives.  "A number of metrics were used, from Fatal Accident Rate (FAR), Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR), Lost Time incident Rate (LTIR), and Process Safety Events (PSE). Whilst the survey did not find the same trends across all respondents, it did identify the following general trends" - This statement is conformance of different approach from organizations towards Process Safety Management of HAZARDOUS Operations and also reminds of Gaps in Codes, Standards and guidelines. • Fatal accidents and LTIR increased among most respondents • Incident severity increased • TRIR and High Potential Incident Frequency were relatively static • Tier 1 & 2 Process Safety Events decreased Some other highlighted common causal factors included: • A lack of onsite management engagement and assurance since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in a perceived change of culture, misalignment of business and safety priorities, and gaps in leadership knowledge of “work as done” • Increased administrative workload taking focus away from core safety-critical responsibilities, reducing individual capacity to manage risk • Continued complexity for contractors from clients’ still misaligned standards, requirements, and lack of implementation of IOGP guidance such as the Life-Saving Rules • The increase in activity levels has resulted in an expanded and less experienced workforce across operators, contractors, and suppliers • New leaders from other sectors with different safety cultures have not been effectively onboarded into the oil and gas industry’s ways of working

𝐏𝐚𝐲 𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐤𝐞𝐞𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 Keep floors, pathways, and work areas clear of unnecessary items to prevent trips and falls, and struck-by hazards. Use labeling and color codes to direct, warn, and communicate information to workers. Implement clear signage that directs workers to emergency and safety equipment. Also, analyze health and safety data regularly to recognize and understand potential risk locations. 4. 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐦𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐦𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 On offshore rigs, the health and safety of all personnel depend on machines. Ensure you regularly conduct all necessary checks to ensure the safety and proper functioning of all equipment, as negligence could have grave consequences. 5. 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐬’ 𝐌𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 Poorly managed workplace culture can negatively impact workers’ safety.  Foster trust and a sense of community among workers to make it easier for them to obey rules, admit mistakes, ask for help, and seek advice when necessary. Workers' mental health can also determine how they respond to safety and emergencies. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have issued a warning to Britain’s offshore #oilandgas organisations to focus on what’s widely known in the sector as #humanfactors, with a particular focus on #safetycritical tasks. The HSE has said, “Offshore companies need to understand and evaluate where and how these safety critical tasks might be vulnerable to human #error". I recently shared a few ideas with a Health and Safety Officer, who was looking at setting 2024 goals to help him progress in his Health and Safety Career. 1.Get a Certification. They play a vital role in demonstrating expertise, enhancing credibility, and opening up new professional opportunities. Consider getting a certification in 2024. A few examples include;  Certified Safety Professional (CSP)   NEBOSH International General Certificate        2. Attend a Conference in 2024 e.g ; https://safety.assp.org/   3. Develop a digital transformation strategy for HSE at your company. This will improve efficiency,increases transparency and it’s easier to attain data that can be used to analyze trends. Working on a software solution for example to manage Accident/Incident reporting is something that will have a great impact. However, its important to first understand the technologies we have as this will enable the HSE personnel pick the right technology that will meet the company budget, needs and preferences.   4.Learn the HSE Legal framework and statutory requirements outside your country.Purpose, to study the legal requirements of Asia Pacific,Americas etc .This will help you better appreciate the diverse backgrounds and cultures we have and support in developing more inclusive HSE programs in future. 5.Up skill your existing knowledge by learning new skills in the areas of technical presentations, business acumen, emotional intelligence,digital literacy,etc.   6.Read books and articles in our industry. Start by subscribing to an E-newsletter.   7.Join an association/society/membership. This is a good platform for networking, sharing knowledge and learning from each other. Examples include, Ergonomics, ISO 45001,Process Safety, Systems Safety, Offshore Oil and Gas, Laser Safety, etc.   9. Seek out mentorship from mentors who have the expertise and skills you need to learn. Make it scheduled and structured so that you are not wasting each other’s time.   In conclusion, the goal is to be 1% better every day in 2024 and beyond, as Safety Professionals by ensuring our roles are future proof, even as new roles are emerging by engaging in personal development and self-transformation as a result of the changing business needs.    

HSE urges better human factors analysis in Offshore Safety 🚨 The UK's Health and Safety Executive (HSE) noted that while Britain's offshore oil and gas installations must meet stringent regulatory standards, human error still poses a significant risk for major incidents. The warning stresses the need for Safety Critical Task Analysis (SCTA) to ensure safety tasks are performed reliably. Many SCTA programs fall short due to inconsistent implementation and commitment. Despite all the effort, expertise, and funding dedicated to evaluating and mitigating contractor risk, contractors still account for 85% of serious incidents. And here's a trend that should make us pause: the frequency of these incidents is rising alongside the growing reliance on a contracted workforce. Surveys of HSE and supply chain specialists highlight a key problem—our current methodologies for assessing risk are falling short. They demand high effort, come with high costs, and still, confidence is low. Experts cite three major challenges: 1. Inaccurate assessments that produce 'false positives.' 2. Unreliable predictions of future performance. 3. Ineffective measurement of safety culture. The feedback from contractors echoes these concerns. A staggering 93% feel that the HSE qualification process is not a value-adding process, burdened by excessive administration and it’s only a matter of time before a serious contractor incident occurs. It is a sign that we've reached a point where traditional approaches are no longer valid. We need a new paradigm, one that effectively reduces serious incident rates. As we move toward greener horizons, safety must not take a backseat. In fact, we need to drive a culture change that fundamentally redefines our QHSE journey (Quality, Health, Safety, and Environment). We must work toward a world powered by green energy, and safety can’t just be an add-on; it must be an integral part of our mission. We're talking about more than just compliance—it's about building a proactive, resilient culture where safety is deeply embedded in every decision, every process, and every partnership. The offshore wind industry offers a case study on this very point. The industry has seen exponential growth, driven by ambitious decarbonization goals worldwide. But as wind farms push further offshore, they operate in more challenging weather and sea conditions. Injury statistics reveal that performance in this sector is three to four times worse than comparable industries. Rapid growth and new technologies add to the complexity, raising the need for sector-specific safety regulations. What’s evident is that maintaining the status quo is not an option. Both regulators and organizations must adapt to evolving safety challenges. Transparency, continual learning, and accountability are essential—especially in a world where safety data often fails to tell the whole story. It's time for a collective effort—a push to transcend outdated paradigms and build resilient, people-centric, and planet-conscious approaches to safety. In oil and gas, safety must be the way you do business. Otherwise, you are out of business. This is because your product portfolio encompasses typical hazards. I was privileged to participate in the launch of our safety day this year as we re- affirm our individual commitment to delivering our products and services in the safest of ways with zero harm to people, assets, and the environment. Having an employer that is committed to the safety of the human resource cannot be understated. Although workplace safety is a legal right according to the labour laws of this country, it is, to a greater extent your personal responsibility to ensure your safety as well as that of others. If you are not proactive about personal safety, let’s call you “selfish”. When you head out to work, there are lots of people counting on your safe return home, don’t let them down. Involving yourself in an unsafe act, without the necessary precautions, not only endangers you, but also those around you.
