I just want to send Rex Airlines some love on this tough day. Those who listen to "The Contrarians with Adam and Adir" Podcast already know how I feel about this carrier. They are almost always on time (sometimes early!). Excellent metal, well fitted out. Great meals. So friendly. Ok, the loyalty program isn't great, the have no app, and the lounges suck. But Flying MEL-SYD and MEL-OOL, I have loved this airline experience. It's such a shame that Rex appears to be finished with its "golden triangle" 737-800 routes. Every flight I ever took was close to full, and the prices were largely on par with VA. So perhaps they just couldn't fly those 737s often enough to cover fixed costs. Their marketing was pretty poor - whenever I raved, nobody was aware that Rex flew MEL-SYD and those that knew the brand thought it was like Jetstar. Rex complained about Qantas to the ACCC in 2020 but was unsuccessful. Even if they had a justified complaint, this should have been modelled as a possible "competitive" response. I want to add that I also love Virgin Australia domestically, especially as they have points that can be easily redeemed. Let's not get too dewy-eyed, though: they need to fix the priority boarding stampede ASAP, and I'd love a Business/Platinum lounge area (eg: upstairs at SYD). But these are actually pathetic complaints to be airing!! 😂 And I love Qantas Airways for their lounges and long haul in-flight service. I'd fly them much more domestically if they were more price-competitive. We remain blessed in Australia with a great airline culture boasting service and lounges far superior to US carriers - and great safety! It's easy to complain because the ticket prices are too high, the flights are not back to pre-COVID levels, and the airports are a mess (although Terminal 4 at MEL is now great, especially security screening). But we live in a great country for domestic air travel, although probably at the expense of great rail travel. I'd still rather a Shinkansen network. It's my view that the Australian government will never save a non-QF carrier, because no other airline has the potential to cost millions of votes. So, I will really miss Rex if and when they stop flying between the big cities. I rarely tag people, but Steve Hui and Adam Schwab will have insightful comments about this.

The new Wizz airline subscription is making news! I think this is an ideal service for solo leisure travelers, but it may not be cost-effective for families or corporate travel. For instance, a family of four would need to pay a membership fee of at least 2k before being able to purchase tickets. This could be a significant expense, especially for a budget-conscious family. Corporate companies may not be willing to pay the subscription fee when business travelers often need to fly to multiple locations and may need to cancel trips at short notice.
This looks like a great deal for Jules Little as he is a well known fan of Wizz Air... now they offer an airline subscription. All you can fly for one fixed price per year... There are still all the usual extra charges for seat selection and baggage, but for frequent flyers in Europe who are not bothered about their carbon footprint I guess this could be worth exploring! #airlines #travel #subscription #wizzair
