In the Spring of 2022, Troy Office Director Katrina Pacheco, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP, served in the Mentorship Program as a highly valued mentor. Her guidance helped Project Designer Keyuri Patel, find new inspiration for her work and offered support during her transition from maternity leave back into the office as a working mother. Katrina's approach to mentoring emphasizes developing a connection, providing real-life examples, and creating a vision. “Connecting to Keyuri was personal and professional; we are part of a firm made of people who do great and wonderful things for each other on many levels. Discussing examples from experience attaches meaning to our challenges and achievements. Future success is built on these mutual foundations. The visions of our futures, for my mentee and myself, are inspired by the care and insight shared in our conversations,” Katrina explains. “My goal is to help a fellow H2Mer find inspiration for their work, advocate for their personal and professional growth, help them understand themselves better, and provide necessary guidance in this early phase of their career,” She continues. “Seeing a mentee succeed is my personal goal.” Katrina believes access to mentorship is essential for career development within our firm, however self-advocacy is just as important. She explains, “Everyone who is hungry to advance their careers deserves a mentor in the firm, especially one who has been in their position before. Keyuri’s drive is essential for reaching the goals she sets for herself. She knows success won’t be handed to her and she is committed to the process.” The experience and industry knowledge provided by Katrina and other mentors in the program enhances H2M’s company culture and creates an environment where staff are able to produce the best results possible. She concludes, “The amount of experience represented by H2M’s leadership is tremendous and should be shared as much as possible to build each other up.”

January 2024 is National Mentoring Month. Mentoring has lots of benefits to both mentees and mentors, and is a great way to improve personal and professional growth. There are lots of opportunities to get involved in mentoring in the housing sector. Chartered Institute of Housing has a mentoring programme dedicated to helping housing professionals gain support in their careers and to help identify relevant development opportunities. They have a new mentoring platform through PushFar, will give both mentors and mentees the tools needed to "make impactful connections that provide opportunities for professional growth." https://buff.ly/3HhRiID. Housing Diversity Network also have a mentoring initiative through their Board Excellence Programme. The programme combines workshop sessions (both in person and virtual) with mentoring sessions, and is specifically focussed on the needs of the board member and the sponsoring organisation. https://buff.ly/3vF5EAk National Housing Federation's mentoring programme offers opportunities for those who are starting their career in the sector to participate in a mentoring session with a leader in social housing. Registered mentees are matched with one of their expert mentors for a one-on-one meeting to discuss their goals, challenges, and gain important insights and knowledge in how to develop in their career. https://buff.ly/3u2PLmx There are many different mentoring opportunities in the housing industry which seek to enrich and develop housing professionals' careers and personal development. If you're not sure where to start, try one of the above programmes, or contact your organisation's employee development team to see what's on offer. https://buff.ly/3TTSGsq #nationalmentoringmonth #socialhousing #personaldevelopment

Proud father, Founder of Know What You're Good At, national award winning higher education professional at DMU and inspirational mentor coach
“I now see more value to mentoring because it has opened my understanding to a different and better perspective to the workplace and employment” You don’t know what you don’t know… Monday evening last week, signalled the return of the online forum, showcasing the talents of long-standing scheme mentor Lina W. and ‘box fresh’ to the scheme mentor Nagma Kazi. Let’s cut to it… Both were excellent. Full of heart, insight, wisdom, and fabulously relatable to boot. Dial in an excellent collective of student mentees comprising a mix of the recently recruited, right through to mentees stemming back a couple of years, and we had the making of a quality evening. So, what did they ask? Questions about the proactive pursuit of their future self, risk taking identification of skills crucial to success, and taking negative feedback in your stride. Lina was wise beyond her years, spoke openly about the likely barriers en-route, shared on her values and how these informed critical decisions, and did so with warmth and care, embodying a great relatable professional. Nagma was measured, powerful and clear in her mentoring, recounting two decades of experience like it was yesterday, relating to her field, critical moments and what it takes to succeed. I dabbled in the responses too, when the mood took me, but this session was all about this quality duo and their take on industry. In a day an age brimmed with distraction, screens, deadlines, responsibilities, and busy head space, the need to carve out quality time to pause, sit ask, and listen is in my view more important than ever. These sessions champion open, honest, and frank discussions around the things that concern our fellow humans. We each have a story and there is power and value in that story, if we can learn how to recount it in ways that connect with others that just haven’t seen or experienced what we have in life yet. Massive thanks go to Lina and Nagma for their story and engaging us. Big respect.

💓 The heartbeat of the recent National Mentoring Summit resonated in the profound discussions that unfolded during our thought-provoking panel discussions. Follow us as we dive into more wisdom shared during the Summit in the following weeks. 🌟 Now let's reflect on the insights shared in our Panel Discussion 1: Fostering a Purpose-driven Culture through Mentoring. The panel discussion emphasised mentoring crucial role in cultivating a purpose-driven culture amid evolving work challenges among youths. In addressing burnout and workload fatigue, mentorship provides clarity on defining organisational success and streamlining work prioritisation. Organisations hold the key to recognising their part in offering mentoring opportunities for employees to learn from one another, explore strategies, forge stronger connections, and eventually, pay it forward. This creates a cycle that, in turn, fuels a collective momentum, contributing to the continuous growth and resilience of the organisation. Mentoring not only paints multiple paths on how success looks but also illuminates how every individual finds fulfilment in their unique role. Imagine a workplace where mentorship becomes a celebration of differences, empowering each employee to contribute their distinctive brilliance to the shared success 🚀. 📌 Want to amplify for your corporate impact through mentoring? National Mentoring Month is an annual campaign celebrated in January, dedicated to raising awareness about the power and impact of mentoring. It's a time to recognise and honour the contributions of mentors while encouraging individuals to become mentors themselves. To be fair this is something our cousins across the pond highlight for a month rather than the day we Brits do in October…but as someone who has been on the receiving end of a good mentor and hopefully helped others by acting as a mentor I’d go so far as to say if you haven’t experienced it in your working life, you are missing a trick. Having worked with people both in the franchise and sign sector I’d certainly say having the ability to talk in confidence with an impartial individual has both been enlightening and refreshing, a mentor won’t have all the answers but will challenge you, act as a sounding board and sometimes even act as your compass (running a business isn’t always simple and external factors can make you lose focus - your mentor doesn’t have those distractions and can help you stay on track) I’m certainly not going to mention those that I’ve mentored over the last 5 years (part of being a mentor is building trust and confidentiality is a huge part of that) but I have found that in my role at ISA-UK I often get calls and am asked to be a sounding board, mentoring in bitesize chuncks if you like. So my message is, don’t look at being mentored as a weakness on your part, it’s often the stepping stone to take you and your business on to the next level and to be fair we all need a sanity check from time to time. I’m here if anyone wants any pointers or guidance on finding the right mentor for you even if that’s just to share my own experiences. ***PS.
