Raw talent or seasoned experience? I don't know about you, but I am a sucker for raw talent. Some of my best hires were as green as Scottish grass. But they had the right stuff - grit, work ethic, drive, and a great attitude. When you go to work, you want to work around people that inspire you, that you like and trust, and that will be a good teammate. Sure, it depends on the job. I'd rather have a seasoned surgeon than a resident do surgery. 😛 But oftentimes, a newbie may turn out to be better for you and your team. It all depends on how much you are willing to invest in that person. One of my best hires was Kimberly Pickard Seryy. When she interviewed for the Assistant Manager position at the Real Estate office that I used to manage, she was new to brokerage. I had her get on the phone and call a landlord. (Not many would welcome cold calling on an interview.) She did it, and she did it with grace. Over the next 7 years, we would grow our office to be one of the highest dollars per desk in the company. Even though Kim didn't have the right experience at first, she acquired it with time. What were the things she learned growing up, that I couldn't teach her? Grit, tenacity, hard work, resilience, reliability, people skills. Today, she heads up one of the top The Corcoran Group offices (the #1 Real Estate Company in NYC).
