Happy National School Counseling Week to all my school counseling friends and colleagues! Professional school counselors can have an impact that extends far beyond the walls of an office or school building, affecting the lives of students in profound ways. From organizing college and career fairs to facilitating mental health awareness initiatives to the critical administration of services - school counselors can be at the forefront of efforts to promote holistic student development. Recent data shows that nationwide, there was an average of 408 students for every one school counselor. However, research supports that school counselors are linked to improved student outcomes, especially with smaller caseloads. There exists a yearly improvement and margin closing since 2013 in the counselor to student ratios. This is a testament of advocacy, changes in counselor education, public sentiment, and the redefining of the profession. The role of school counselors is pivotal in the support and uplifting of students and their futures, and in turn - THE future, all of ours. The Covid pandemic provided additional funding and attention to those ratios, making it possible to create a positive impact on the lives of students.
