We’re thrilled to share the heartwarming results of a new study by Edith Cowan University showcasing the positive impact our Justice Facility Dog, Winston, has on children and their caregivers alike in the Perth Children’s Court. Trained by our experts at Guide Dogs WA, Winston serves as a Justice Facility Dog, offering a comforting presence to young victims and witnesses undergoing the daunting process of legal proceedings. Recent research conducted by Edith Cowan University underscores the significant role Winston plays in enhancing the wellbeing of these young individuals. His calming influence is a gentle yet powerful force, alleviating the inherent stress and anxiety associated with the court environment. This study is the first of its kind in Western Australia and reaffirms our belief in the power of Guide and Assistance Dogs beyond their traditional roles. It’s not just about the guidance they provide, but also the emotional support and the sense of security they bring in environments that can often feel overwhelming. Winston’s contributions extend beyond individual comfort; they represent a progressive stride in integrating therapeutic support within the Australian justice system. His work is a shining example of the potential our dogs hold in fostering a more compassionate society. As we celebrate Winston’s impact, we also recognise more than ever, the need for us to continue this essential service, ensuring that more individuals can benefit from the unique assistance these dogs provide.
