We’re thrilled to share the heartwarming results of a new study by Edith Cowan University showcasing the positive impact our Justice Facility Dog, Winston, has on children and their caregivers alike in the Perth Children’s Court. Trained by our experts at Guide Dogs WA, Winston serves as a Justice Facility Dog, offering a comforting presence to young victims and witnesses undergoing the daunting process of legal proceedings. Recent research conducted by Edith Cowan University underscores the significant role Winston plays in enhancing the wellbeing of these young individuals. His calming influence is a gentle yet powerful force, alleviating the inherent stress and anxiety associated with the court environment. This study is the first of its kind in Western Australia and reaffirms our belief in the power of Guide and Assistance Dogs beyond their traditional roles. It’s not just about the guidance they provide, but also the emotional support and the sense of security they bring in environments that can often feel overwhelming. Winston’s contributions extend beyond individual comfort; they represent a progressive stride in integrating therapeutic support within the Australian justice system. His work is a shining example of the potential our dogs hold in fostering a more compassionate society. As we celebrate Winston’s impact, we also recognise more than ever, the need for us to continue this essential service, ensuring that more individuals can benefit from the unique assistance these dogs provide. WHAT IS JOHNSON V. GRANT'S PASS? The Supreme Court is going to hear a case tomorrow and the results of the decision could be profound for communities across the country. And, potentially profoundly harmful for people with nowhere to sleep. I decided to write about it and this post includes some of my personal opinions. But it also includes the actual text of the laws at issue so you can read them for yourselves. And, since my professional life and my previous legal career mashes up against these issues I tried to share some perspective on the policy and practical issues. https://lnkd.in/gc4AgUfF

Contemplations... Are we harnessing the power and wisdom of community? I recently had an opportunity to listen to a conversation between Mary Johnson and Oshea Israel. Mary is a mother who formed a friendship with the young man (Oshea) who had murdered her son in the years after his killing. (https://lnkd.in/g3TpAG5b). This moving narrative provoked some serious food for thought. I have been contemplating about the effectiveness of our traditional justice systems and the restorative approach to justice. In contrast to the conventional, retributive criminal justice process, restorative justice operates off the premise that committing a crime is not wrong because it breaks a rule, but because it causes harm, and there is an obligation to understand and repair that harm. In upholding our interconnectedness, restorative justice invites all those who have impacted by harm into a conversation. Collectively, these individuals discuss the underlying causes of harm and determine a path to move forward. Beyond the individuals directly impacted by conflict or harm, restorative justice asks each of us to reflect on our collective responsibility for creating conditions that enable and foster harm, and tasks us with supporting accountability and safety. By widening who is responsible and who is capable, restorative justice harnesses the power and wisdom of community. The focus is on repairing harm and restoring relationships. How ready are we in our families, organizations and communities to embrace the restorative approach to justice? #RestorativeJustice #Peacebuilding #RestoringRelationships #RepairingHarm

Relationships are hopefully like Edinburgh Castle, impressive to those looking on, built on rock solid foundations, and likely to last forever. But some don't work, and often in those instances things can, even if its relatively briefly, get quite unpleasant. Arguments over children, money and dogs? One imagines cats do as they please. Nasty messages, passive aggressive emails maybe even unwelcome appearances at the door? These things do inevitably happen. As does false allegation/exaggeration of misbehaviour, particularly when there is an ongoing contact dispute. The next step, considerably more likely than you'll think, is criminal investigation. Domestic prosecutions have skyrocketed in recent years and nobody, professionals included, are safe from their reach. These are sensitive matters with far reaching implications for family life, employment and liberty. We have experienced, discreet, and dedicated representation available to protect you, your family, your clients and/or your colleagues/friends. #duncanandmcconnell #domestic #criminallaw #dundee #edinburgh #criminallawyeredinburgh

✅Fact: The law hasn’t caught up with our new, modern family structures. It’s still designed with the traditional mom/dad/2 children in mind. So if you have a blended family, you may not know that you’re at risk for accidentally disinheriting your kids. 👶It’s true. Check out our blog for what you need to know. 👀▶️ https://lnkd.in/ggHB4UXm #flagstafflawgroup #trusts #wills #livingwills #powerofattorney #probate #estateplan #guardianship #healthcaredirective #legacy #familylegacy #assetprotection #personalfamilylawyer #estateplanningattorney #family #adulting #flagstaff #azmom #flagstaffmom #flagstaffattorney #arizona

Parental intimate partner homicide has immense but under-recognised and under-studied impact on the children who are bereaved and the people around them. Our team is conducting participatory qualitative research to better understand children and caregivers’ needs and opportunities for support. This presentation will provide a brief overview of the international evidence base as well as preliminary insights from 70 in-depth interviews with (young) people with lived experience, caregivers and a range of professionals the UK, Ireland and Australia. Interviewees conveyed a need for genuinely child-centred approaches to support, especially in the context of fragmented service responses. People with lived experience called attention to the lifelong impact of the homicide and the ebb and flow – rather than a linear decrease – of support needs over time. Several expressed an interest in sharing experiences with others with lived experience. Caregivers reported gaps in the provision of financial, mental health and child trauma specific information and support. Professionals often experienced a sense of isolation and lack of consultation options to support families. Our preliminary findings suggest that concrete steps can be taken to improve support in the aftermath of a domestic homicide, including dedicated case management, peer support, caregiver support and secondary consultation for professionals. Effective design and implementation of such measures require co-creation with young people and adults with lived experience.
