Celebrating Black History: Mary Van Brittan Brown, Pioneer of Home Security Systems This Black History Month, we celebrate the groundbreaking achievements of Mary Van Brittan Brown, an African American inventor whose innovative spirit paved the way for modern home security systems. Born in 1922, Brown faced numerous challenges as a black woman in a predominantly male-dominated and racially segregated society. Despite these obstacles, her determination and ingenuity led her to develop a revolutionary invention that would transform the way we think about home security. In the 1960s, Brown, a nurse, and her husband, Albert Brown, an electronics technician, lived in Queens, New York, where crime rates were high. Frustrated by slow police response times and concerned for their safety, Brown conceptualized a closed-circuit television system that could allow homeowners to see who was at their door and communicate with them remotely. This vision laid the foundation for the first home security system. In 1966, Brown's invention was patented as the "home security system utilizing television surveillance," marking a significant milestone in the history of security technology. Her system included a set of peepholes, a camera, and a two-way microphone to communicate with visitors at the door. When triggered, the system would automatically contact the police. Thriving Black-owned banks create more opportunities for people of color, opening doors to break the cycle of financial exclusion. This exclusion has historically kept Black families from passing down generational wealth, averaging 200 times less than white families. Our team talk this week started off heavy with discussions of the AntiBlack terror in Jacksonville and evolved into the importance of honoring the humanity of one another and how White people can show up better when these incidents happen.  
 More specifically, how can White practitioners/professionals/community members ease the burden of Black Chief Diversity Officers in organizations being asked, over and over, to send out statements about the violent theft of life of Black community members.  
 Our Black diversity officers come to work when these events happen, they show up, and it is likely there is a deep heaviness of spirit. Asking these humans to draft a performative statement is a violation of their humanity.  
 So, how can we do better? How can our White friends, family, and colleagues provide support in this way? 1️⃣Challenge the performative nature of tasks around these violent events. Ask if it is necessary to do this right now and for whom? Could someone else write up the message? Could we do more than a message?  
 2️⃣Offer to write up the message instead and spare Colleagues of Color the burden of writing while healing. Simply asking is a gesture of preserving and protecting their humanity.  
 3️⃣ Ask how to best support Black friends, family, and colleagues. I'm holding space for you right now, how can I lift you up in this moment of grief, how might I best return some peace to you? #honoringhumanity #consciousleadership #advanceequity #healing #hope #capacitybuilding #reflection #teamtalk
