Professor of Instruction & Program Director, U. of Iowa Sport and Recreation Management (B.S./M.A.) program. Also Adjunct Faculty in UI College of Law teaching Sports Law, Baseball Arbitration, NCAA Infractions Process
Podcast recommendation. I was interviewed for "The Bison Project" podcast by Mark W. Wright, but the real story is about the Howard University men's soccer team that won an NCAA championship only to have it stripped from them due to NCAA eligibility violations. I was included simply to add context to the NCAA infractions process. Listen because it's a heartfelt, compelling story about a group of mostly international student-athletes at a HBCU that shocked college athletics by winning a national championship and the pain they still feel today because, in the early 1970's, the NCAA's infractions process suffered from shockingly inadequate due process that left the players, coach and institution questioning the NCAA's motives. Thankfully, in the 50+ years since Howard's case, the NCAA has instituted meaningful procedural protections that provide a more transparent process to institutions and individuals defending against infractions allegations. With the release of this podcast, the NCAA has an opportunity to revisit and thoroughly explain the circumstances that led to a title being taken from an HBCU, the logic behind vacating victories when ineligible athletes compete, the responsibility NCAA schools have for certifying eligibility, and the steps taken by the NCAA to establish more appropriate due process protections to avoid so many lingering questions after penalties are assigned. https://lnkd.in/g42Uag3y

From the Director of the Tulane Sports Law Program, here is a podcast you don't want to miss on the future of college sports! #sportslaw #sportslawexperts #tulanelaw
We are in the midst of one of the most transformational periods in college sports history. The NCAA faces legal threats from the courts to Congress to the states to the NLRB, but there is no bigger threat facing the NCAA right now than the antitrust lawsuits led by Jeffrey Kessler, Co-Executive Chairman at Winston & Strawn LLP. Kessler--one of the most successful sports lawyers in the country—successfully argued Alston v. NCAA in the US Supreme Court and is now the lead attorney in House v. NCAA and the recently filed Carter v. NCAA, two cases that could fundamentally change college sports and lead to billions of dollars in damages. Jeffrey Kessler joined my podcast to discuss these antitrust suits and the future of college sports. It was a really interesting and insightful conversation and I hope you have a chance to listen (or, if you don’t have a chance to listen, I hope you have a chance to download it and give it 5 stars). We often view American sports through the prism of a 'big four'. But the reality is that college football is second only to the NFL in its ability to attract huge television audiences. It's why major broadcasters are spending billions on media rights and creating new timeslots for the most high profile matchups. These huge contracts coupled with changes to NIL regulations and the advent of the transfer portal have catalysed the professionalisation of college sports. Conference realignment, an expanded postseason, and, potentially, pay for play, are all consequences. Long term, this could erode college football's appeal. In the short term, it's unstoppable. #sportstech #sports #sport #collegesports #collegefootball #ncaa #big10 #pac12 #sec #acc #big12 #cfp #espn #fox #nbc #sportsbroadcasting #football #sportsbiz #sportsbusiness

Trent Seaborn, a 15-year-old quarterback at Thompson High School in Alabama, recently received a $1 million NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) offer from trading card company Leaf, which he declined to avoid transferring out of state. This situation has ignited a discussion about high school NIL deals, currently illegal in Alabama and 11 other states while neighboring states like Georgia and Florida allow them. The article examines the implications of NIL deals on college recruiting and the need for education in this evolving landscape. While they can empower young athletes, concerns about inequality, particularly for elite football and basketball players, remain prevalent. https://lnkd.in/e-Ep5vA2

As we reflect on the past half-decade, it's undeniable that the landscape of college sports has undergone a profound metamorphosis. From the way student-athletes choose their academic homes to the revenue game, the industry's tectonic plates have shifted. Let's delve into the seismic changes reshaping the collegiate athletic sphere: 1️⃣ Student-Athlete Decision-Making: Beyond the Field 🏀📚 - Gone are the days when athletic prowess solely dictated a student-athlete's college choice. Today, we witness a paradigm shift as these young talents approach their academic journey with a holistic perspective. Factors like academic programs, campus culture, and community engagement now weigh as heavily as the sports programs themselves. 2️⃣ Admissions Process: A Holistic Revolution 🎓⚖️ - The admissions process, once tethered to athletic scholarships, has evolved into a more holistic and equitable system. The emphasis is on embracing diversity and acknowledging the multifaceted talents that each student-athlete brings. Title IX has played a pivotal role in ensuring gender equality in athletic opportunities. 3️⃣ Financial Revolution: NIL, Revenue Sharing, and Broadcasting Rights 💰🎥 - The groundbreaking introduction of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) rights has given student-athletes unprecedented control over their personal brands. This empowerment has not only leveled the playing field but also reshaped the revenue distribution model. The sharing of tournament revenue, especially in top division schools, has fostered a more equitable distribution, benefiting athletes across various sports. 4️⃣ Marketability: From Inside Out 📈🔄 - Marketability in college sports has taken a 180-degree turn. It's no longer solely about the institution; the focus has shifted to individual athletes and their stories. With the rise of social media, athletes have become brands in themselves, transforming how colleges approach marketing and endorsements. This shift has not only opened new revenue streams for athletes but also changed how colleges strategize their marketing efforts. 5️⃣ Broadcasting Rights: The Digital Arena 📡💻 - Broadcasting rights, once exclusive to traditional channels, have embraced the digital revolution. Streaming platforms, social media, and online content have become pivotal in reaching a broader audience. This democratization of access has not only increased visibility for sports programs but also provided a more immersive and interactive experience for fans. In conclusion, the past five years have witnessed a monumental transformation in the college sports industry. The synergy of NIL, Title IX, revenue sharing, top division dynamics, and digital broadcasting has sculpted a more inclusive, dynamic, and commercially vibrant landscape. 🌐🏆 #CollegeSportsEvolution #StudentAthletes #SportsIndustryTransformation #OnBusiness https://lnkd.in/dB9fvXks

Front Office Sports' David Rumsey: TV Networks Are Programming College Football’s Future: What’s Next? College football entered this conference championship weekend in rare circumstances: with major postseason implications at every Power 5 title game. Heading into the weekend, seven of the top eight teams in the College Football Playoff rankings were given the opportunity to make their case — and potentially seal their fate — with a win in their respective games. But a year from now, with an influx of new money coming into the sport, things are bound to look drastically different. Realignment is consolidating the top conferences to a Power 4 whose championship games will no doubt be impacted by the CFP’s expansion to 12 teams. Conferences are changing how they distribute money, creating a bigger divide between the haves and have-nots — and unsurprisingly, it’s all driven by increasingly lucrative media rights deals from college football’s biggest broadcasters. Now, the question is: Will the upcoming changes put the sport in a better or worse position? via @FOS
