Yesterday I was out with one of the leaders from my mandir (temple) where I am Chair or Trustees doing some shopping for an event we have coming up. We ended up at wholesalers and a flood of memories hit me about when I used to accompany my Dad back we had a small grocery shop in the middle of Sparkbrook in Birmingham. It was where my journey in customer experience really began. I used to watch and listen to my Dad and Uncle interact with customers. Always smiling, making reference to the last time that customer was in and often suggesting new items which they may like to try. When it came time to check out there was always someone to help bag the groceries and, if needed, help customers to their cars. When I break that down into today's customer experience strategy, here is what they were doing (with no tech, just pen and paper!) 1️⃣ Letting the customer know they valued them. That greeting and welcome back, let our customers know that we valued their business and that they were important to us. We weren't taking them for granted, especially as more competition opened up and were selling items cheaper. 2️⃣ Personalising the experience Remembering the last time a customer was in the shop, when they last saw each other at a community function or asking about their families was all part of creating a personal touch. By staying close to the customer and understanding buying habits and patterns, my Dad and Uncle were able to up and cross sell items which were more likely to fit with that customer. 3️⃣ Reducing customer effort. Making the checkout process easy and taking away the pain of bagging groceries was a nice touch at the end of the buying experience. It's the last thing they would experience but probably the first thing they would remember. Customer experience doesn't have to be overly complicated!
