A fan of meat-free Mondays? Being honest, in the Cowley-King household it is not always Monday, but we do have multiple meat-free days during the week. It has only taken me 18 years to "nudge" my carnivorous BBQ loving antipodean other half who believes it is perfectly OK to eat steak for breakfast! Unlike when I was a child, there are some absolutely delicious vegetarian and vegan recipes now available that promote and support the wider health and wellbeing benefits around 30 plant-based foods per week. Meat production, especially beef, is incredibly resource intensive, requiring more energy, space and feed per calorie, than plant-based foods. Producing 1kg of grain-fed beef requires up to 25kg of grain and approx. 15,000 litres of water. The power of possibility - did you know that according to the Global Footprint Network, by eliminating meat consumption one day per week, we could collectively delay #EarthOvershootDay by an estimated 1.8 days. Nobody puts baby carrot in the corner! We put salad in the center 365 days a year. We want you to do the same—even if just for one day. Nothing here comes as a surprise to you (yes, food industry we’re talking to you). The health of the planet and the people living on it is in bad shape and it keeps declining. A big part of the cause, as well as a big part of the solution, is unfortunately and fortunately the same. It’s food. The world needs better food. We (yes, still talking to you food industry) must make better, more nutritious, and sustainable food. And make it available, appetizing, and affordable for the many. The fact that green and plant-based food isn’t the baseline of what is offered today, but merely a side-, or optional offer, is upside down. Green and plant-based can’t be a side thing—it has to be the main thing. On the 20th of March, we release this year’s Vegocracy Report, packed with insights on how we can create and encourage change on many levels. Catapulting salads, and good food, from the sidelines to the spotlight encapsulates the essence of Picadeli. And now we want the rest of you to do the same—even if it’s just for one day: World Salad Day. This is the bottom line (both figuratively and literally speaking): We need to do better.
