Hiring a sr leader in cannabis? Industry experience is a MUST! if you’re looking to gin things up, this is a “can’t fail”. In reality, it depends. It depends on the role (maybe not necessary for the CEO, more likely so for the Director of Ops). It depends on the scale and stage of the company (probably not super important for the COO of one of the largest MSOs, probably more important for the <$20M operator). It depends on the complementary skill set of the supporting staff. It really depends on if flower products (bulk or packaged flower, prerolls) are included in the mix. Understanding why some flower does or does not sell is not always straightforward. Edibles and beverages, and even vape, are less nuanced.

A new opportunity

Yesterday I posted a job advert for a Head of Quality Assurance & Regulatory Affairs vacancy with a $300K+ base salary Within 4 hours, it received 43 applicants Only 3 of these applicants met the JD & screening requirements I do not doubt by Friday there will be 100+ applicants, probably >15 qualified for the role Luckily, I don't rely on job postings when conducting searches. But it makes me think... How do start-ups, with direct hiring as their strategy, being led by CEOs & Founders, have the time to source for business-critical hires? We just placed a Med-Tech Sr Director of Regulatory Affairs & Quality who never should have gotten the job. He never should have gotten the job because he probably wouldn't have ever KNOWN about the job in the first place. He had been working for years in a smaller organization, head down, doing a great job. Enjoyed the small-company environment. Yet, silently he was getting bored. Tired of not growing forward vs same ole day to day When he got the "tap on the shoulder" aka the call from our team He was met with a conversation that surprised him. It was about his aspirations, his goals. Not the "sale of a job" to a stranger. As we uncovered what truly was important to him He realized it was time to saddle up & put himself in an uncomfortable spot.... Exploring new roles for the first time in quite some time. Turns out our recruiter, Penni Kittelson, had a local role that matched to the T what he aspired to ...and what the company needed was the candidate's direct experience By having a Headhunter involved in this scenario, I think there were 3 major value-adds: 1. Paninis, Underground Bars, Broadway and…Biotech??? Huh? Although I have enjoyed the opportunity to work remotely, the relationships I have made from years of in person collaborations have been so rewarding.  Seeing my cross-functional colleagues frequently in meetings, in the elevator, grabbing coffee and so on, led to the development of incredible long-term friendships.  Recently I have reconnected in person with former colleagues from a variety of departments: Commercial, Clinical Development, Toxicology, Clinical Pharmacology, Medical and Legal over paninis, at a cool bar hidden in a subway station, at a Broadway show and of course, over the proverbial coffee!!!  Over the years we have offered each other advice, helped to negotiate job offers, made introductions and shared experiences that were helpful in seeking the next opportunity.  Not to mention the support network provided as we faced aging parents, illnesses and deaths, moves and other life struggles. Don't assume that the rules are the same for the UK and the EU. The regulatory frameworks are quickly diverging. 3. Maintain an accurate and up-to-date PIF with CPSR. The national competent authority can request this at any time, so be prepared. Analytical testing may be required such as Challenge Tests for water-based products. 4. Ensure that your artworks are in tip-top shape and every aspect has been assessed for compliance. This includes ensuring that all product claims are substantiated by a robust body of scientific evidence. 5. Notify products, watch out, you can be fined thousands for selling products are are not registered. 6. Operate a cosmetovigilance system to record, trend, and analyze safety information.
