GroupM remains the market leader with a market share of over 27%, up 12%. The agencies led by Gino Baeck's teams have pulled out all the stops: Mindshare is now number one in the agencies ranking with a market share of 12%, Wavemaker is credited with the highest absolute growth (+ €20.5 million) and EssenceMediacom is not to be outdone, moving up two places in the ranking. We’re proud to share that Publicis Media has retained the #1 ranking in global new business according to the Final 2023 Global New Business Barometer from COMvergence. At the media agency group level, Publicis Media leads in both global Total New Business (including retentions) at $6.1 billion and Net New Business (excluding retentions) at $3.2 billion among the “big 6” groups for the full 2023 year. Additionally, Publicis Media placed #1 among its competitors with a global retention rate of 61%. Further, Spark Foundry ranked first globally in Net New Business (excl. retentions) among the top 20 agency networks with incremental total billings of +$1.3 billion. It is a tense time for GroupM, the world’s largest media buyer. With Kirk McDonald, the CEO of its North America division and arguably one of its most prominent senior executives, stepping down after three years, the pressure is on to not only find his permanent replacement — but to replace hundreds of millions of lost media revenue from client desertions. What’s even worse for this WPP-owned global media agency group is that these issues represent just the tip of the iceberg. In Q3 of this year, GroupM experienced modest #revenuegrowth of only 1.6%, in contrast to the “high single-digit” growth achieved by Publicis. Year-to-date, #GroupM revenue did grow at a healthier 4.6%, according to its latest earnings report, more in line with other #holdcos. And privately, executives believe it will net out well ahead of Q3’s dip. So, why the slowdown? It’s due to a combination of factors, like losses in North America, #tech advertisers cutting back on spending and even a bribery investigation in China involving GroupM. New: WPP's GroupM is planning to make a subtle but significant change as part of its move to simplify its business to give it a more competitive edge. From next year, GroupM will allocate budgets and resources solely on a country-by-country basis, an accounting strategy that has worked at rival agencies previously, but also disrupted senior staff who enjoyed the autonomy and seniority P&L responsibility brings. Currently GroupM has country-level P&Ls and agency-level P&Ls. OMD USA has retained its position as the top-billing media agency in the US for 2023, with billings totalling $9.6 billion, a 4.6% increase from the previous year. Publicis Media leads at the group level with $23.9 billion in billings. The COMvergence report highlights the overall growth in the industry, with total billings up 1.3% from 2022. Notably, digital media spending increased significantly, making up 54% of total billings. Some really interesting findings showcasing the dynamic nature and robust growth of the industry.
