𝗧𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗶𝘁 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲 🛠 The path to Net Zero is filled with challenges, especially when it comes to retrofitting older buildings. Just came across this interesting read which highlights the key barriers and what needs to change to make retrofitting a cornerstone of our sustainability efforts. Question for those in the industry, what are the biggest challenges you face in meeting EPC standards across your housing stock and how are you tackling these? #NetZero #Sustainability #EnergyEfficiency #Decarbonization #SustainableHousing #AffordableHousing #PublicSector #UrbanPlanning #CommunityDevelopment #SocialHousing #HousingAssociations #LocalGovernment #FutureOfHousing #SustainableLiving #EnvironmentalImpact #PropertyManagement #BuildingPerformance

"Notably, carbon offsets are not allowed (in this new definition of Zero Emission Buildings). The aim of the new definition is to focus attention squarely on lowering #BuildingEmissions, #electrifying all building equipment, and procuring #CleanEnergy to power it. It also seeks to avoid controversies about the verifiability of #CarbonOffset claims that have disturbed the market in the past year. The definition also does not account for emissions from embodied carbon (from constructing the building) or emissions from #Refrigerant chemicals, the #GEP global warming potential of which can be far higher than energy-related #GHG #emissions." #netzero ##netzeroemissions #USGBC #GBCI #SPSA https://lnkd.in/dGub7x4C

Empowering organizations to navigate the intersection of core business principles and ESG & Sustainability imperatives with over 15 years of proven expertise
The focus on net zero in real estate has been growing, but the lack of consensus on its definition has hindered progress. The US Department of Energy (DOE) has now introduced a national definition of a zero emissions building to provide clarity and minimum criteria. The building must be highly energy-efficient, free of on-site emissions from energy use, and powered solely from clean energy. The aim is to lower building emissions, electrify equipment, and procure clean energy. The definition does not consider embodied carbon or emissions from refrigerants. The standardized definition may drive greater market transformation and provide confidence to investors, lenders, and tenants. While it is not currently a regulatory standard, it could become incorporated into policy, offering incentives for compliance.

While 2023 is officially the hottest year on record – no thanks to climate change – #greenbuildings in #Singapore rose to meet the challenge of a sustainable future. In 2023, the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) certified four Green Mark Zero Energy (#ZE) buildings and 15 Super Low Energy (#SLE) buildings. These buildings were a mix of new builds and older buildings which were retrofitted to meet the Green Mark standard.

You only get one shot! Knowing how much impact your buildings have on environment is important to make better design and operational decisions to reduce those impacts. Carbon in materials is one of those key factors that ESG and municipalities around the U.S. are working on to address this. Both Andrew Graceffa, RA and I were interviewed by Bisnow about embodied carbon and what is going on in marketplaces around the U.S. and the building industry, and how we are helping to measure and reduce carbon impacts.
