This conference is an important event that focuses on the most important issues of European society and the poultry sector. We are therefore very pleased that our colleague Dr. Benedikt Thesing was given the opportunity to speak to an international audience beside speakers from all over the world about the possibilities of reducing NH3 emissions with the help of our innovative bedding solution "ImproBed". This reflects the importance of this topic for the poultry sector. Our contribution was categorized in the topic area "Sustainability", which deals with sustainable solutions and practices in the poultry sector. We are proud to have been part of this important conference and to have our contribution to sustainability in the poultry sector. #EPC2024 #Sustainability #GRILLO #PoultryConference #ImproBed

There is room for improvement in the EU, when good intentions of sustainability has created a massive administrative burden on the primary producers, that increase production cost to a level that limits the EU aquaculture production to 10% of the EU aquatic food consumption. We think it is really crucial - for the #sustainable European #aquaculture - to give proper attention to investments in the feed sector. There are very few consumers who realize the simple fact that having to feed farmed aquatic animals, the majority of which are carnivores, creates an ecological and ethical inconvenience. Nowadays, to produce feed, so-called poor fish are often used - such as sardines and anchovies - often removed from the diet of coastal populations in Africa, where they often represent the only source of protein. These fish are also an important link in the #oceans #ecosystems (remember that they absorb more than 30% of CO2). So it doesn't seem right to us, in an attempt to solve the (obviously complex) problem of #seafood #farming, to create damage on the other side. And it is precisely for this reason that we want to commit ourselves to the recovery of waste and transformation products - which would otherwise end up in landfill - to be truly sustainable (and self-sufficient) in the very first italian crustacean value chain.
One of the key ways to make aquaculture more sustainable is to replace wild-caught sources in aquafeed. F3 Future of Fish Feed is running the F3 Krill Replacement Challenge to encourage the development of alternatives to krill in fish feed. We are thrilled that three of the finalists are products developed by our portfolio companies. ย Congratulations to Protix, Enifer, and Calysta! Protix's insect-based protein meal and Enifer's PEKILO mycoprotein made the cut. Calysta's joint venture product with Adisseo, Calysseo, is also among the finalists.ย ย ย The 10 finalists will be put to test with a 12-week feed trial for Atlantic salmon - we anxiously await the results! Let my superstars help with your testing needs
Our Food Micro technologists have been hard at work identifying ways that they can offer a faster result for aquaculture processors, to ensure their products are free from Vibrio contamination and safe for consumers. They have successfully developed, validated and gained ISO 17025 accreditation for a PCR method that can detect three Vibrio species (Vibrio chloerae, Vibrio vulnificus and Vibrio parahaemolyticus). We can now provide the following results: - a "not detected" result in 24 hours* - confirmed positive results for Vibrio chloerae in 48 hours - confirmed positive results for Vibrio vulnificus in 48 hours - confirmed positive for Vibrio parahaemolyticus in 72 hours This gives our aquaculture producers the assurance of a fresh, quality, safe for consumption product to market. Please get in touch with our Client Service Managers, Barbie and Marisa, for more information on this new method at [email protected] *Please note this service is only available at our Christchurch lab and samples must be submitted to the lab by 4.30pm.

What an unforgettable panel discussion we had at NASF on the use of Insects ingredients in the aquaculture sector.ย The engagement was fantastic, thanks to the Mentimeter questions that sparked lively discussions. ย During the discussion, we asked: "What do you see as the biggest obstacle hindering the wider adoption of insect-based ingredients in the aquaculture industry?" 44% of the audience highlighted insufficient scaling in the supply chain as the major challenge. ย At Protix, we have been actively working to address it. Since 2019, our first industrial-scale plant has been operational, and we've been focused on making technological advancements to ensure a consistent supply of top-quality products. Our efforts haven't gone unnoticed; recently, major organizations like Tyson Foods and the European Investment Bank (EIB) have recognized our progress and invested in Protix to establish insect ingredient factories in the US and Poland. ย Now, it's time for us to come together and create a clear roadmap with feed suppliers and their stakeholders to attract further investments for scaling up. Connect with us to be part of this exciting journey. Join the future of food today! #NASFBergen #SustainableSeafood #Aquaculture #insectbasedfeed #BetterTogether

Incredibly important when thinking about sustainability to consider the entire supply chain. This tool should help do exactly that! (I also helped in a very very small way, but just like in reducing carbon, every little helps right)
Seafood businesses operating in the wild capture and aquaculture sectors can now register to use our Seafood Carbon Emissions Profiling Tool ๐ The tool allows organisations to help identify where carbon hotspots exist in their supply chain, giving them insights into areas they can make positive changes. The Seafish board, plus other industry representatives, will be walked through the tool at a stakeholder reception in Grimsby tonight (Monday) by our Head of Responsible Sourcing, Stuart McLanaghan PhD FIEMA FLS.
