Today is the IMO Day of the Seafarer, when we can all celebrate the vital contribution made every day by the men and women who serve at sea. There is no shipping industry without our seafarers, and their immense professionalism and commitment deserves to be recognised. The theme for this year is ‘your tips for safety at sea’ and our Loss Prevention team has shared their advice for all seafarers. 🤔 Safety is no accident. Always risk assess, never guess.  🚦Always be aware of and critically assess the environment you are working in.  👷🏽♀️ Safety is a state of mind - accidents are absence of mind.  🚨 Don't take shortcuts and follow the safe practices onboard.  📋Know your rights, including the right to stop work if you believe conditions are unsafe. 🧰 Always use the correct tool for the job.  🦺 Always wear the correct PPE for the job.  🤕Always make sure you are fit for duty.  🤒 Illness, lack of training and intoxication can increase risk of injury. ⛔️Never enter a space unless you are 100% sure it has a safe atmosphere.  🆙 Look up, risks are in all directions.  ✋ Stop the Job if you think there is a risk.  🥽 PPE is useless in your cabin.  🙋🏽♂️ If you are feeling low, seek help.  🗣️ Maintain effective communication with other crew members. Enclosed Space Entry is a recurring problem in the maritime industry. In case of emergency in enclosed spaces, TIME is very essential. The faster the response, the better the outcome. With the Enclosed Space Location Monitoring Sheet, the location of the person inside the space is being monitored with regular reporting. Additionally, it aids the enclosed space rescue by: - A drawing/ diagram of the enclosed space is readily available on site for rescue planning purposes - Last reported position of the person inside is marked, thus making rescue operations faster and efficient. The importance of the role that seafarers play in global trade and the global economy cannot be overstated: they are at the very heart of shipping worldwide. We celebrate our brothers, Sisters, husbands, wives and friends in this noble professional. Indeed you are our heroes of the global blue economy and lifeblood of International trade. Your resilience, dedication and professionalism are all appreciated. Being a Seafarer comes with a lot of sacrifices, commitment, trust, challenges and hard work. We salute your courage, and determination. Many atimes you are away from your family for months, striving and working hard on the rough ,turbulent and high seas. A quick review of this year's theme is Navigating the Future - SAFETY FIRST. You can not talk about Safety in the Maritime Industry without SOLAS Convention. What does SOLAS stand for? Safety Of Life At Sea. SOLAS Convention in its successive forms is generally regarded as the most important of all International treaties concerning the safety of merchant ships. SOLAS Convention was adopted in 1914, in response to the sinking of the TITANIC boat disaster. The 2nd Version was adopted in 1929 while the 3rd and 4th versions were adopted in 1948 and 1960 respectively. The 1st version passed in 1914 in response to the sinking TITANIC which described numbers of lifeboats and other emergency equipment along with safety procedures, including continuous radio watches. The SOLAS Convention sets out the minimum standards of how ships should be built, equipped and operated to ensure their safety. This includes guidelines for the structure machinery, electrical equipment, fire protection, life saving appliances, radio communications, navigation safety and cargo carriage. The adoption of SOLAS in the Maritime industry was triggered by the need to ensure safety regulations. Elements of SOLAS covers aspects such as stability, electrical installations, fire protection etc. The SOLAS Convention is one of the four (4) most important pillars of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) instruments, which regulate questions relating to Maritime Safety, the other three are the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from ships (MARPOL), the Convention for Standards of Training, Certification and Watch keeping (STCW) for Seafarers and the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC). All of these Conventions are geared towards Safety of Life at Sea. I encourage everyone to embrace SAFETY today. As we celebrate this year's International Seafarers' Day,, remember SAFETY FIRST. It begins with you and I. So be safety conscious while you navigate through the seas, oceans, remain focused, determined, dedicated and professional.
