I was not fortunate enough to attend any development sessions at GE's Crotonville facility, but it was legendary in leadership development. The sale of the property definitely signals an end of an era and begs the question of if leadership development can be taught effectively in a virtual environment. While we're all proponents of it based on efficiency and sheer cost avoidance, I think we lose something really significant when we're not in person. Am I a dinosaur? It was a pleasure to be part of the BOMA NY Leadership Breakfast alongside Reed Hatcher late last year. There are real challenges for large urban corridors across the U.S. but there is also reason for optimism in the data. For example, net migration trends have returned to pre-pandemic norms for large cities--and in some cases, numbers in 2023 were actually better than in 2019. International immigration has also increased over the past two years, and that is a big contributor of population growth in gateway markets like NYC. People--especially many young, educated workers--still want to live and work in major cities. NYC and others will continue to be magnets for people, companies and jobs.
